Among the latest examples are Jyoti and Nishi Bhatia, who have established an endowment to provide graduate fellowships at the University of Texas at Dallas.
The new initiative, named the Nishi and Jyoti P. Bhatia Fellowship, will offer financial support to graduate students while helping them access resources needed for academic research, innovation, and collaboration. As part of the recognition for their contribution, a collaboration space on the first floor of the Engineering and Computer Science West Building at UT Dallas has also been named in their honor.
The Bhatias share a deep connection with the university. Jyoti Bhatia is a graduate of UT Dallas, where he earned a degree in international management studies. His family’s association with the institution continued as two of his children also completed their studies there. He said the university holds a special place in their lives because of the strong personal and academic ties they have developed over the years.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jyoti Bhatia has been actively involved in community service through organizations including the Hindu Temple of North Texas, the India Association of North Texas, the Asian Chamber of Texas, and Lions Clubs International.
Nishi Bhatia also has a strong educational background and connection to the US academic system. She moved to the United States to study at the University of Kentucky before building a career as an educator with the Plano Independent School District. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support students and contribute to the university community.
The first recipients of the fellowship are expected to be selected in the fall. The program aims to reduce financial challenges for graduate students and allow them to focus more effectively on research, learning, and innovation.
The Bhatias said their goal is to create opportunities for deserving students who have already demonstrated dedication and hard work. They believe that financial assistance can help remove barriers and encourage students to achieve their academic goals.
