Indian-American physician and entrepreneur Dr. Kali P. Chaudhary has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform the long-abandoned Oceanwide Plaza in downtown Los Angeles into a landmark that reflects both his personal journey and India’s growing global presence. The project, which he intends to rename KPC Square, is designed to honor his Indian heritage while recognizing the opportunities that enabled his success in the United States.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with IANS, Chaudhary described the redevelopment as far more than a real estate investment. He said his dream is to create a destination that symbolizes the achievements of the Indian community and proudly displays the Indian flag in one of America’s most prominent urban centers. According to him, the project is intended to leave a lasting legacy that future generations can identify with for centuries.
Chaudhary explained that acquiring the property was a lengthy and highly competitive process. He revealed that the legal battle lasted more than five years and involved nearly 90 competing bidders before a court ruled in his favor. Rather than viewing the outcome as a personal triumph, he said he considers it a victory shared by Indians around the world.
The proposed redevelopment spans an entire city block in downtown Los Angeles and includes several signature attractions. Among the highlights are plans for a soaring architectural spire, a New Year’s Eve celebration featuring a ball drop similar to the iconic event in New York City’s Times Square, and one of the world’s largest wraparound LED displays. Chaudhary believes these features will help establish KPC Square as a major cultural and entertainment destination while representing India’s identity on an international stage.
Reflecting on his background, Chaudhary emphasized that although he is proud to be an American citizen, he remains deeply connected to his Indian roots. He said the project represents an opportunity to give back to both countries that have shaped his life. He also expressed hope that India and the United States will continue strengthening their partnership through closer economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties.
During the conversation, Chaudhary praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, saying it has inspired many members of the Indian diaspora and increased global confidence in India’s future. He even expressed his wish for the Prime Minister to inaugurate KPC Square once construction is complete.
The Oceanwide Plaza site has remained unfinished for several years, making it one of downtown Los Angeles’ most visible stalled developments. Its redevelopment carries added significance as the city prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games, positioning KPC Square as a potential centerpiece in the ongoing transformation of central Los Angeles while showcasing the achievements and aspirations of the Indian-American community.
