US Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have announced the arrival of their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance. The birth marks a rare moment in American political history, making JD Vance the first sitting US vice president in more than 150 years to welcome a child while serving in office.
The couple shared the joyful news through a joint statement posted on social media, revealing that Alec was born on Sunday morning. They said both Usha and the newborn are healthy and doing well, while their three older children—Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel—are thrilled to meet their new baby brother.
The Vances also expressed gratitude to the medical teams at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit for their care and support throughout the delivery.
The newest addition to the family aligns with JD Vance’s long-standing public stance encouraging higher birth rates in the United States. Since entering national politics, the vice president has frequently voiced concerns about the country’s declining population growth. During his speech at the 2025 March for Life rally in Washington, he reiterated his belief that America should welcome more children, making family growth a recurring theme of his public messaging.
Vance has also indicated that the 2025 death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a close friend, influenced the couple’s decision to expand their family.
Throughout his tenure as vice president, JD Vance has often traveled internationally with Usha and their children, offering the public a glimpse into their family life. Usha Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants, has attracted growing public attention in recent years. According to historical records from the White House Historical Association, the previous sitting vice president to welcome a child while serving was Schuyler Colfax in 1870. Before that, John C. Calhoun became a father during his vice presidency in 1829.
The Vance family’s announcement also comes during a period of several high-profile births among members of President Donald Trump’s administration, adding to what observers have described as a notable baby boom within senior White House circles.
