Prime Minister Narendra Modi held high-level discussions with European Union leaders on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, reinforcing the growing partnership between India and the EU. The meeting brought together Modi, European Council President Antonio Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as they explored opportunities to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen strategic ties in an increasingly complex global environment.
The leaders reviewed the significant progress achieved since the 16th India-EU Summit earlier this year, which marked a turning point in bilateral relations. The conversation focused on building upon recent achievements and accelerating collaboration across trade, investment, connectivity, and security. Senior Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, also participated in the discussions.
Following the meeting, Modi described the interaction as productive and highlighted the importance of expanding economic linkages between India and the European Union. He emphasized that stronger cooperation between the two partners can contribute significantly to global peace, stability, and economic prosperity. Modi also reflected on the close engagement that has characterized India-EU relations this year, recalling the visit of the European leaders to India during the Republic Day celebrations.
Trade emerged as a central theme of the talks. Both sides expressed satisfaction over the successful conclusion of negotiations for a landmark Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to transform commercial relations between the two economic powers. The agreement is viewed as one of the most ambitious trade arrangements negotiated by either side and is expected to create new opportunities for businesses, investors, and industries.
Antonio Costa reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to formally signing the Free Trade Agreement before the end of the year. He also indicated that discussions would continue on a broader investment framework designed to enhance capital flows and business cooperation. In addition, Costa highlighted plans to strengthen collaboration in defense and security matters, reflecting the expanding scope of India-EU engagement.
Another major topic was the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC), a strategic connectivity initiative aimed at improving transportation, trade routes, and economic integration across multiple regions. Leaders agreed to accelerate efforts related to the corridor, viewing it as a key project for boosting connectivity and supporting long-term economic growth.
The meeting underscored the increasingly strategic nature of India-EU relations. As both sides seek to navigate evolving geopolitical and economic challenges, their expanding partnership is expected to play a vital role in shaping regional connectivity, fostering sustainable growth, and strengthening international cooperation in the years ahead.
