Former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden has offered new insights into Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the United States in June 2023, revealing both personal diplomatic exchanges and the extensive preparations behind the official White House state dinner held in his honor. The details appear in her recently released memoir, which explores her experiences in the East Wing during major international events.
In her account, Biden describes receiving a 7.5-carat lab-grown diamond from Prime Minister Modi during the visit. She notes that such diplomatic gifts often carry symbolic meaning and are subject to strict federal ethics guidelines in the United States. According to her memoir, the Indian leader explained that the synthetic diamond was crafted in his hometown and represented India’s growing role in the global lab-grown gem industry.
Biden recalls that Modi initially valued the diamond at approximately $2,500, even presenting documentation related to its purchase. She admitted that she briefly considered buying the piece for herself, describing it as visually striking and unique. However, the situation changed after the US State Department assessed the diamond’s value at nearly $20,000, significantly higher than the original estimate. As a result, she did not proceed with purchasing it.
Under US government regulations, such diplomatic gifts are considered property of the federal government rather than personal possessions of officials. Biden explains that she was later permitted to use the diamond in a ring setting for official appearances, with the option to display it in her office or borrow it for public engagements. Eventually, after leaving the White House, the item was returned in accordance with protocol.
The memoir also highlights the complexities involved in hosting a state dinner for the Indian leader. Biden describes months of planning leading up to the event, only to encounter numerous last-minute dietary requests from guests. While organizers initially designed a vegetarian menu, additional requests for vegan, dairy-free, and garlic-free options required rapid adjustments from the White House kitchen staff.
She emphasizes that state dinners demand precise coordination, where every detail, from floral arrangements to menu design, is carefully curated and executed on a strict timeline. According to her reflections, even minor elements are subject to scrutiny from both attendees and the media, making the process highly demanding.
Modi’s 2023 visit, which included the high-profile state dinner, was widely viewed as a milestone in strengthening India-US relations, particularly in areas such as defense cooperation, technology partnerships, semiconductor development, and broader strategic collaboration.
