Keya Wingfield, an Indian-American chef originally from Mumbai, has shared her inspiring journey of transforming her health and lifestyle after years of struggling with weight-related challenges. Now in her early 40s, Wingfield decided to make a significant change in 2022 when she realized that her physical and mental well-being needed urgent attention.
At the time, she weighed 104 kilograms and was dealing with several health concerns, including hormonal imbalances, high insulin resistance, and diabetes. Beyond the medical issues, she felt emotionally drained and knew she wanted a healthier future for herself and her daughter. Reflecting on that period, Wingfield said she began thinking seriously about the kind of parent she wanted to be and recognized that improving her health was an important step toward that goal.
Her journey was not only about weight loss but also about overcoming years of criticism and body shaming. Growing up, she often faced harsh comments about her appearance. According to Wingfield, both children and adults frequently focused on her size rather than her personality or achievements. She recalled being told that her weight would negatively affect her future and remembered how difficult it was to find clothing that fit comfortably.
One particularly painful memory involved a group of women approaching her as a teenager to promote weight-loss products. Instead of offering encouragement, they warned her that she would struggle in life if she failed to lose weight. Experiences like these left a lasting impact, but they ultimately strengthened her determination to take control of her health on her own terms.
Over the next two years, Wingfield successfully reduced her weight from 104 kilograms to 63 kilograms, shedding approximately 41 kilograms. Rather than following a highly restrictive diet, she focused on consistency. She maintained an online food journal and regularly tracked her meals. Her approach centered on simple, repeatable foods, including eggs, vegetables, low-carb dishes, rice bowls, and protein-rich vegetarian meals.
Exercise also became a key part of her routine. She walked daily, lifted weights three to four times each week, and participated in boxing sessions once or twice weekly. Among all her fitness activities, she credits strength training as the most transformative aspect of her journey.
Today, Wingfield believes the secret to long-term success is not motivation but discipline. She encourages others pursuing weight-loss goals to practice self-compassion and remain patient with themselves. Her story highlights how consistency, healthy habits, and a positive mindset can lead to lasting change and improved well-being.
