Google technology executive Senthil Subramanian has been elected to the Board of Governors of GS1 US, joining a leadership group responsible for guiding standards and innovation across global supply chains, retail systems, and digital commerce networks.
Subramanian currently serves as principal engineer and area technical lead at Google, where he oversees the company’s Shopping Graph platform. The system powers shopping-related experiences across multiple Google products, including Search, YouTube, and advertising services. His responsibilities involve ensuring the accuracy, scale, quality, and real-time freshness of extensive product and offer data used by consumers around the world.
His appointment comes at a time when industries are rapidly modernizing operations through automation, digital integration, and advanced data management systems. GS1 US stated that Subramanian’s technical expertise in large-scale infrastructure and information systems will support the organization’s efforts to strengthen global standards for supply chain efficiency and digital commerce.
Before joining Google, Subramanian held senior technology roles at Yahoo, where he focused on advertising infrastructure and audience-targeting technologies. He also played a key role in the early development of Hadoop, one of the most influential open-source big data technologies that transformed large-scale data processing across industries worldwide.
GS1 US highlighted that businesses are increasingly dependent on standardized digital systems to manage inventory, logistics, consumer engagement, and global operations. The organization believes Subramanian’s experience in engineering scalable technology platforms will provide valuable insight as companies continue adapting to evolving market demands.
In addition to Subramanian, GS1 US elected Steven Chyung and Omar A. Tovar to its Board of Governors. Chyung currently serves as senior vice president and chief supply chain and procurement officer at Kaiser Permanente, overseeing sourcing, planning, fulfillment, and procurement operations. His previous experience includes leadership positions at Novartis and SCL Health.
Meanwhile, Tovar leads global logistics and supply chain operations at Urban Outfitters. He brings more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing, logistics, and retail operations, including earlier executive roles at Nike and Coach.
The GS1 US Board includes senior executives from several major multinational corporations across industries such as healthcare, retail, food services, and consumer products. Companies represented on the board include Amazon, Walmart, Target, PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, Johnson & Johnson, and The Kroger Company, reflecting the organization’s broad influence across global commerce and supply chain standards.
