Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oslo on Monday for a landmark two-day visit to Norway, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Scandinavian nation in more than four decades. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store personally welcomed PM Modi at the airport, highlighting the importance both nations are placing on strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation.
Soon after landing in Oslo, PM Modi shared his appreciation for the warm reception and emphasized his confidence that the trip would deepen ties between India and Norway. He noted that the visit would create new opportunities for collaboration while reinforcing the longstanding friendship shared by the two countries.
During his stay, the Indian Prime Minister is scheduled to hold formal talks with Prime Minister Store and meet Norway’s King Harald V and Queen Sonja. Modi will also participate in the third India-Nordic Summit, where leaders from Nordic nations are expected to discuss regional cooperation, economic partnerships, sustainability, and innovation-driven growth.
The visit is being viewed as a significant diplomatic step by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, which described Norway as an important strategic partner. Officials stated that the meetings in Oslo are expected to inject fresh momentum into bilateral relations and expand cooperation in several sectors.
One of the major highlights of the visit will be the India-Norway Business and Research Summit, where both prime ministers are expected to address business leaders and researchers. Discussions are likely to focus on investment opportunities, clean and green technologies, renewable energy, maritime industries, and the blue economy.
India and Norway are also looking to strengthen trade under the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached nearly $2.73 billion in 2024, while Norway’s Government Pension Fund has invested close to $28 billion in India’s capital markets. Officials believe the visit could open new pathways for increased investment and economic collaboration.
PM Modi arrived in Norway after completing his visit to Sweden, continuing his diplomatic outreach across the Nordic region. The visit is expected to reinforce India’s growing engagement with Northern European countries and strengthen partnerships in areas tied to sustainability, innovation, and economic development.
