India is set to host the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting this week, marking an important diplomatic event that will bring together senior representatives from member and partner countries to discuss global challenges and strengthen multilateral cooperation. The meeting will be held on May 14 and 15, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar presiding over the sessions.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Foreign Ministers and delegation heads from BRICS nations will participate in the discussions. As part of the official schedule, the visiting leaders are also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their stay in India.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the meeting will include in-depth discussions on pressing global and regional issues of mutual concern. He added that the event will provide an important platform for member countries to exchange perspectives on international developments and cooperation strategies.
On the second day of the meeting, participants will take part in a thematic session titled “BRICS at 20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This session will focus on strengthening long-term cooperation among member nations while promoting innovation and sustainable development.
Another major discussion will center on reforms in global governance and the multilateral system. Officials indicated that these conversations will aim to enhance the role of emerging economies in international decision-making and promote a more balanced global order.
India, which is chairing BRICS in 2026, has placed special emphasis on themes such as resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. These priorities reflect a broader vision of inclusive global development and a people-centered approach to international relations.
The BRICS grouping, originally formed in 2006, has evolved significantly over the years. It held its first summit in 2009 in Russia, and South Africa joined the group in 2010, expanding it to BRICS. In recent years, the group has further expanded to include partner countries, reflecting its growing global influence.
Officials noted that BRICS operates on the basis of consensus, and decisions regarding expansion and membership are collectively made by participating nations. Recent enlargements of the group were discussed at previous summits held in Kazan and Johannesburg.
Several foreign ministers, including Russia’s Sergey Lavrov, are expected to attend the meeting in New Delhi. Discussions between Lavrov and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will also focus on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and preparations for upcoming intergovernmental commission meetings.
The event is expected to play a key role in shaping the agenda for the next BRICS summit and strengthening strategic partnerships among member countries, particularly in the areas of trade, technology, and global governance reform.
