Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to To Lam on his election as President of Vietnam, expressing optimism about the continued growth of the longstanding friendship between India and Vietnam. Modi emphasized his commitment to working closely with the newly elected leader to further deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
“Heartiest congratulations to Mr. To Lam on his election as President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. I am confident that under his leadership, the enduring friendship between our countries will continue to strengthen. I look forward to close collaboration to advance our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the prosperity and progress of our peoples and the region,” PM Modi posted on X.
To Lam’s election was confirmed on April 7 by Vietnam’s National Assembly, with all 495 deputies present voting in favor of the draft resolution. Lam previously served as Vietnam’s President from May to October 2024 and has been General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) since 2024. He was re-elected for the 2026-2031 tenure at the first meeting of the 14th CPVCC on January 23, 2026, according to Xinhua News Agency.
India and Vietnam maintain a close and warm relationship that has been officially recognised as a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This status was established during PM Modi’s visit to Vietnam in 2016. The partnership is guided by the “Joint Vision for Peace, Prosperity and People,” which was adopted during a Virtual Summit on December 21, 2020, with former Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
The bilateral ties encompass multi-dimensional cooperation, including trade, defence, technology, and regional diplomacy. In 2022, India and Vietnam celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, reflecting decades of growing collaboration. Both countries continue to work actively to strengthen this partnership across economic, strategic, and cultural areas, underlining the shared commitment to regional stability and mutual progress.
Under To Lam’s leadership, India anticipates further enhancement of the bilateral relationship, with initiatives focused on economic growth, strategic cooperation, and the well-being of citizens in both nations. This renewed leadership promises a strengthened collaboration framework and reinforces India’s long-term vision for robust engagement with Vietnam.
