Former India captain MS Dhoni congratulated the national team after their historic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, describing the triumph as a remarkable achievement for Indian cricket. Dhoni said it was a pleasure to witness the team create history with a dominant performance against New Zealand in the tournament final.
India secured a convincing 96-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, achieving several milestones in the process. The win made India the first team to successfully defend the Men’s T20 World Cup title, the first to capture the championship three times, and the first side to lift the trophy on home soil.
Under the leadership of captain Suryakumar Yadav, India delivered a flawless campaign after he assumed captaincy in July 2024. The team maintained an unbeaten record throughout the tournament, demonstrating strong performances with both bat and ball.
The final saw India produce an exceptional batting display, posting a massive total of 255 runs for five wickets. Sanju Samson played a key role with a powerful innings of 89 runs from 46 deliveries, setting the tone for the team’s commanding score. Contributions from Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, who both scored half-centuries, further strengthened the total and placed New Zealand under immense pressure.
Dhoni, who attended the final at the stadium, later shared a message on social media praising the entire team. In his post, he congratulated the players, coaching staff, and supporters across the world for their role in the memorable victory. The message marked his first social media update since July 2024 and quickly attracted attention from cricket fans.
The legendary wicketkeeper also applauded head coach Gautam Gambhir for guiding the team through a successful tournament campaign. Dhoni remarked that Gambhir’s intense approach combined with a positive attitude had helped create a winning environment within the squad.
He reserved special praise for fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered a match-winning performance in the final. Bumrah’s impact with the ball played a crucial role in dismantling New Zealand’s batting lineup and ensuring India’s comfortable victory.
After India’s massive total, the bowling attack quickly took control of the match. Bumrah and Axar Patel led the charge, removing key New Zealand batters and preventing the opposition from building any meaningful partnerships.
With New Zealand eventually bowled out for 159 runs, India sealed a comprehensive victory and added another major chapter to their cricketing legacy. Dhoni’s congratulatory message reflected the pride felt across the cricketing community as India celebrated one of its most significant tournament triumphs.
