The Indian cricket team etched its name deeper into the record books by registering a historic milestone in ICC tournaments, surpassing the dominant Australian side led by Ricky Ponting that many consider the greatest team in cricket history. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India secured their third consecutive win in the 2026 T20 World Cup with a commanding 61 run victory over arch rivals Pakistan on February 15 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
This triumph marked India’s eighth win over Pakistan in nine T20 World Cup meetings, reinforcing their supremacy in the tournament. In the 50 over World Cup as well, India have maintained a flawless record with eight victories in eight encounters against Pakistan. In the shortest format, their overall head to head record against the 2009 world champions now stands at 14 wins to 3 losses, highlighting a long period of dominance.
India’s latest achievement extends beyond bilateral bragging rights. The team has now won 16 consecutive matches in ICC events, the longest streak ever recorded in international tournament history. This remarkable run began during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where India lifted the trophy unbeaten with eight straight victories. They carried that momentum into the 2025 Champions Trophy, winning all three group matches before triumphing in both the semifinal and final. The ongoing 2026 T20 World Cup has further stretched this sequence, allowing India to move past Australia’s previous best streak of 15 consecutive wins achieved between the 2006 Champions Trophy and the 2007 World Cup.
The current dominance builds upon the strong foundation established during Rohit Sharma’s captaincy tenure. Since their semifinal exit in the 2022 T20 World Cup, India have won 26 of their 27 ICC matches. Their only major tournament defeat in recent years came in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad, which ended a separate 10 match winning run in that event.
Statistically, India’s rise has been equally impressive in bilateral T20 internationals. In 2024 alone, they recorded a win percentage of 92.31 percent, claiming 24 victories in 26 matches. This surpassed Pakistan’s previous benchmark of 89.43 percent set in 2018, making India the first team to finish a calendar year with more than 90 percent success after playing over 15 matches.
Additionally, India have now won 11 consecutive games in T20 World Cup competitions, extending their own tournament record. The next best streak in the event stands at eight wins, achieved by both Australia and South Africa. Their eight victories against Pakistan also represent the highest number of wins by any team against a single opponent in T20 World Cup history.
With consistency, depth, and strong leadership, India’s current era is shaping into one of the most dominant phases the sport has ever witnessed.
