During the opening of the Budget Session, President Droupadi Murmu addressed a joint sitting of Parliament, urging lawmakers to unite on key national priorities such as Viksit Bharat, national security, and the Swadeshi campaign. She emphasized that these issues transcend political differences, calling on all MPs to place the nation above partisan interests and actively contribute to India’s development.
Murmu highlighted the government’s continued push for economic and social reforms under the “reform express,” aimed at making India a developed nation by 2047. She praised the Indian armed forces for Operation Sindoor, noting that any acts of terror would be met with decisive action, and stressed that India has shown power can be exercised responsibly and wisely.
Invoking leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Babasaheb Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Murmu reminded MPs that while differing opinions are natural in a democracy, issues like national unity, self-reliance, and security must see unanimous support. She urged lawmakers to take a collective stand on matters of national interest and drive the country’s progress.
On social initiatives, the President highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering marginalized communities, including Dalits, backward classes, tribal groups, and other vulnerable populations. She noted that nearly 250 million Indians have been lifted out of poverty over the past decade, while social security benefits now reach around 950 million citizens. Murmu also cited the government’s efforts in reducing corruption and ensuring proper use of public funds.
Regarding rural development, she discussed the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (VB-G RAM G), which guarantees 125 days of work for rural households, reduces leakages, and boosts local economies. The scheme drew protests from Opposition members demanding its rollback, while treasury benches voiced strong support.
Murmu further highlighted India’s international and technological achievements, including a free trade agreement with the European Union expected to boost manufacturing, services, and employment, and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s historic visit to the International Space Station. She emphasized that India’s Gaganyaan Mission and plans for a future Indian space station signal the country’s growing ambitions in space exploration.
Concluding her address, Murmu reiterated the need for parliamentary unity on development, national security, social justice, and prosperity, stressing that collective action is key to achieving Viksit Bharat.
