Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance are expecting their fourth child, a boy, this July, marking a historic moment as the first known instance of a sitting vice president’s spouse giving birth. The couple announced the pregnancy on January 20, confirming that both mother and baby are doing well.
The Vances, the nation’s first millennial second family, currently have three children: 8-year-old Ewan, 5-year-old Vivek, and 3-year-old Mirabel. The couple has generally kept their children out of the public spotlight, emphasizing privacy while serving in public office. “We’re very happy to share some exciting news. Our family is growing!” Usha Vance wrote on X.
No previous wife of a sitting vice president is believed to have given birth while her husband held office. Historically, the last presidential spouse to give birth while in the White House was Esther Cleveland, daughter of President Grover Cleveland, in 1893. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, in 1963, delivered Patrick Bouvier Kennedy prematurely, who tragically passed away after two days.
During the announcement, the Vances expressed gratitude for the medical and support staff who help ensure the family’s well-being while allowing them to serve the nation. “During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors and staff who support our family,” they said.
JD, 41, and Usha, 39, met at Yale Law School and married in 2014. In prior interviews, Usha noted that while a fourth child had occasionally been discussed, she had initially been content with three. The family resides at the Naval Observatory in Washington, where the children have adapted seamlessly. “They have full run of the place and are really good sleepers,” Usha shared, noting that late-night guests do not disturb them.
Looking ahead, Usha has expressed a desire to one day return to Cincinnati, their former home, while maintaining a balanced life in the nation’s capital as part of the second family.
