Sergio Gor officially began his term as the United States Ambassador to India and Special Envoy to South and Central Asia after presenting his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu on January 14. The ceremony marked the formal start of his diplomatic assignment in New Delhi.
Speaking to guests at the U.S. Embassy following his oath-taking, Gor emphasized that relations between India and the United States are firmly rooted at the highest levels of leadership. He noted that cooperation between the two countries remains strong despite differences, adding that genuine partners are able to resolve disagreements through dialogue.
Gor said he had personally witnessed the close working relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to him, the understanding between the two leaders reflects the broader strength of bilateral ties and provides a stable foundation for continued engagement.
Outlining his priorities, the new ambassador described the India–U.S. relationship as strategically vital and said his role would focus on advancing the partnership further. He stressed that his mandate was to build on existing cooperation and expand collaboration across key areas of mutual interest.
Gor also shared that President Trump had spoken positively about his earlier visit to India and his interactions with Prime Minister Modi. He expressed hope that Trump would return to India within the next one to two years, underscoring the importance both sides place on sustained high-level engagement.
