Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he was deeply concerned by reports of the targeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence and stressed that diplomacy remains the most viable path to ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated that ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the best opportunity to end hostilities and achieve peace. He urged all concerned parties to remain focused on dialogue and avoid actions that could undermine peace initiatives.
The statement followed claims by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Ukraine launched unmanned aerial vehicles targeting President Putin’s state residence in the Novgorod region during the early hours of December 29. According to Russian authorities, all drones were intercepted by air defence systems, with no casualties or damage reported.
The reported incident comes amid intensified diplomatic engagements aimed at resolving the conflict. On Sunday, US President Donald Trump described his telephonic conversation with President Putin as “good” and “very productive,” ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the conversation between the Russian and US leaders. Trump later said peace negotiations were “very close” following discussions with Zelensky, adding that significant progress had been made toward ending the war.
India has consistently called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, reiterating its position that lasting peace can only be achieved through constructive engagement.
