Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underscored the importance of revitalizing historic trade relations between India and Jordan to unlock new economic opportunities. Speaking about the longstanding commercial ties, he noted that India is currently Jordan’s third-largest trading partner and emphasised that bilateral engagement should extend beyond mere trade figures.
“India holds the position of the third-largest trading partner of Jordan. While numbers are important in business, our goal is to build a sustainable, long-term partnership,” PM Modi said. He highlighted the need to restore historic trade routes, recalling the era when commerce flowed from Gujarat to Europe through Petra.
The Prime Minister described India-Jordan relations as unique, where historical trust converges with future economic potential. He pointed out that discussions focused on leveraging geography to create opportunities and converting these into sustainable economic growth. Highlighting India’s economic trajectory, PM Modi mentioned that the country is on course to become the world’s third-largest economy, growing at over 8%, supported by strong governance, innovation, and higher productivity.
He stressed that India offers vast opportunities for Jordanian investors across multiple sectors. Digital cooperation was a key point of discussion, with PM Modi citing India’s successful public digital infrastructure platforms—UPI, Aadhaar, and DigiLocker—as models of inclusion and efficiency that could benefit Jordan. The leaders explored linking these digital frameworks with Jordan’s systems to foster collaboration.
Additionally, PM Modi highlighted the potential for connecting startups from both nations under a shared platform, fostering innovation, ideas, and capital flow to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
At the India-Jordan Business Forum in Amman, King Abdullah II lauded India’s economic growth under PM Modi’s leadership and stressed Jordan’s strategic potential as a trade hub linking South Asia with the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. He expressed optimism about elevating the economic partnership to new heights through collaboration and mutual growth opportunities.
