The Election Commission announced on Thursday that the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections saw a voter turnout of 65.79 percent. However, this figure may be subject to change as it does not yet include postal ballots.
In comparison, the voter turnout for the 2019 parliamentary elections was slightly higher at 67.40 percent.
During the 2019 elections, India had 912 million registered voters, of which 615 million cast their votes. By the 2024 elections, the number of eligible voters had increased to 968.8 million.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar reported at a recent press conference that 642 million voters participated in the 2024 elections.
The Election Commission’s statement specified that the 65.79 percent voter turnout was recorded at polling stations, which counts the votes cast using electronic voting machines.
The commission also noted that comprehensive statistical reports, including the number of postal votes and total voter turnout, will be released after finalizing the details from various states and Union Territories, following standard procedures.
