India’s entry into 5G technology has significantly boosted mobile download speeds, propelling the nation to the 47th position in the Speedtest Global Index, ahead of countries like Japan, the UK, and Brazil, according to Ookla. India’s speed performance has increased 3.59 times since the introduction of 5G, marking it as a remarkable advancement. In this global ranking, India surpassed not only its neighboring countries but also some G20 nations, such as Mexico, Turkey, the UK, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa.
The introduction of 5G technology by operators like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel has led to a substantial increase in 5G subscribers and improved overall user experience. The Net Promoter Score (NPS) indicates that 5G users in India consistently rate their network operators more positively compared to 4G users. Additionally, 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services have been introduced to provide broadband connectivity in areas where laying fiber is costly or impractical.
India’s mobile users have high data consumption rates but have faced network congestion and other challenges with 4G networks. With the deployment of 5G base stations across the country, operators have been able to address some of these issues, reducing 4G network congestion. Jio and Airtel have been implementing 5G technology since October 2022, leading to noticeable improvements in network performance.
By August 2023, median 5G download speeds exceeded 240 Mbps across all telecom areas, with Kolkata leading the way with a median download speed of 385.50 Mbps. The adoption of 5G technology has marked a significant leap in India’s mobile internet speeds and user experience.
