The Indian Navy’s groundbreaking sailing expedition, Navika Sagar Parikrama II, reached a major milestone as INSV Tarini docked in Fremantle, Australia, following an exhilarating 39-day journey spanning approximately 4,900 nautical miles. This historic voyage, led by two trailblazing women officers, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A, is setting new standards in naval operations and gender empowerment.
Flagged off from Goa on October 2, 2024, to mark Gandhi Jayanti, the expedition aims to showcase India’s maritime expertise while championing sustainability and gender equality. Upon their arrival in Fremantle on November 9, the officers were warmly welcomed by Australian dignitaries, Indian expatriates, and representatives of the Australian Navy, celebrating their remarkable achievement.
The docking in Fremantle signifies a landmark achievement for both the officers and the Indian Navy. Lieutenant Commander Dilna K shared her delight, describing Australia as “breathtaking” and expressing excitement at completing such a significant leg of their journey. The mission is part of a larger initiative to break barriers for women in traditionally male-dominated fields, encouraging more women to pursue careers in defense.
Fremantle’s Mayor, Hannah Fitzhardinge, extended a heartfelt welcome to the officers, stating, “It’s an honor to host these courageous women who represent not just India but the values of determination and leadership for future generations.”
This voyage symbolizes much more than nautical navigation. It underscores the Indian Navy’s dedication to advancing gender equality by positioning women officers at the forefront of high-profile missions. Through their efforts, the Navy hopes to inspire young women worldwide to envision themselves as leaders in defense services.
As they prepare for the next leg of their global circumnavigation, Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A remain steadfast in promoting empowerment, sustainability, and adventure. They plan to connect with local communities along the route, sharing their extraordinary experiences to motivate future leaders.
