The Gita Press of Gorakhpur, which was established in 1922 with the aim of spreading the teachings of the Hindu faith through books and periodicals, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The commemorative events began on June 4, 2022, with the inauguration by former President Ramnath Kovind, and concluded with a visit from Prime Minister Modi on July 7.
Initially, Gita Press operated out of a rented room in Kolkata under the management of Jaydal Goenka and Hanuman Prasad Poddar, as a part of the Govind Bhawan Karyalaya. Today, it has grown to become the largest publication center for Hindu religious literature in the world.
Over the years, Gita Press has printed more than 140 million copies of the Bhagavad Gita and 100 million copies of the Ramcharitamanas, offering them at subsidized prices. These publications are available in various Indian languages, including English, and can be found throughout India as well as in major international cities.
The press is also home to an art gallery that showcases 684 paintings depicting the divine exploits of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna, created by renowned artists from the past and present.
Furthermore, the Gita Press archives house an impressive collection of over 3,500 manuscripts, including more than 100 different interpretations of the Bhagavad Gita.
