India and Bhutan have reaffirmed the strength of their longstanding partnership, reviewing a broad range of bilateral, regional and international matters during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s three-day visit to Bhutan.

Jaishankar also reiterated India’s backing for the Bhutanese King’s vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City. Both governments agreed to maintain discussions through their Joint Working Group and explore further cooperation connected with the ambitious development project.

Connectivity and easier movement were also addressed. India reaffirmed its plan to establish an immigration checkpoint at Hatisar in Assam to support the movement of investors and visitors traveling to Gelephu. Bhutan welcomed India’s decision to introduce a temporary immigration facility there from November 1, 2026, particularly to assist third-country nationals involved in Project 108 Chortens/Stupas.

The two sides also discussed multilateral cooperation. India thanked Bhutan for backing its bid for a non-permanent United Nations Security Council seat for 2028-2029, while India welcomed Bhutan’s ratification of the International Big Cat Alliance framework agreement.

The visit concluded with both countries emphasizing their close ties, built on mutual trust, goodwill, understanding and strong people-to-people connections.

The Association of Indo Americans (AIA) organized an interactive community session in Milpitas, California, bringing together students and India’s Consul General in San Francisco, Satish Kumar Sivan. Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the growing connection between Seattle’s technology ecosystem and India during a forum that brought together more than 40 Indian-origin technology executives.

The “Ideas4India: Indian American Tech CEOs Forum | Unlocking the Tech Dividend” was organized by the Consulate General of India in Seattle to explore ways to deepen technology collaboration between India and the United States. The gathering followed the India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi in February.

Nadella attended as the guest of honor alongside Consul General Prakash Gupta. Reflecting on his nearly 35 years of experience in Seattle’s technology sector, Nadella noted the remarkable evolution of the region’s technology community and welcomed its increasingly strong connections with India.

He described AI as a general-purpose technology whose impact would ultimately depend on how broadly it is adopted across economies, communities and industries. India has reached a significant milestone in its semiconductor manufacturing drive, with five semiconductor units now built and operating in production, according to S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Speaking about the country’s progress, Krishnan described 2026 as an important year for India’s semiconductor ambitions. The government’s focus is now moving beyond establishing individual manufacturing facilities toward creating a broader ecosystem capable of supporting different stages of the chip value chain.

The next phase, known as the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, is expected to build on the manufacturing capabilities developed during the mission’s initial phase. Its broader objective is to strengthen domestic capabilities and develop supporting industries needed for a sustainable semiconductor sector.

The ecosystem-focused approach is intended to expand the capabilities surrounding semiconductor production rather than concentrating solely on manufacturing plants. This includes building the infrastructure, industrial capacity and supporting businesses required to strengthen India’s position in the global semiconductor landscape.

International participation at SEMICON India 2026 has also highlighted the growing global interest in India’s semiconductor ambitions. More than 600 companies are participating in the exhibition, including around 300 companies from overseas.

The event has attracted nearly 40,000 registered delegates from 52 countries, with international participants accounting for approximately one-third of the total. The strong participation brings together companies, investors, policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders from across the semiconductor and electronics industries.

The fifth edition of SEMICON India is taking place from September 17-19 at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi. This year’s theme, “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem,” reflects the government’s broader emphasis on developing an integrated semiconductor and electronics ecosystem.

The three-day event provides a platform for industry leaders and policymakers to discuss manufacturing, investment, research, technology and the development of supporting capabilities in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to distribute more than 51,000 appointment letters to newly recruited youth joining various government organizations during the 20th Rozgar Mela on September 19, 2026.

India and Canada are working to accelerate negotiations for a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with both sides aiming to complete the trade pact by the end of 2026.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said he held a productive meeting with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, in New Delhi on September 18. The discussions focused on advancing negotiations and creating greater opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Following the meeting, Goyal said the two countries had reaffirmed their leadership’s commitment to moving the negotiations forward and reaching an agreement at the earliest possible opportunity. The proposed CEPA is expected to cover several areas, including trade in goods and services as well as investment.

India and Canada began their fourth round of CEPA negotiations in New Delhi this week. The five-day discussions include issues such as market access for goods and services, rules of origin and technical barriers affecting trade.

The latest round follows the third phase of negotiations, which was held in Ottawa in July. The two countries are seeking to maintain momentum as they work toward the year-end deadline established by their leaders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed in March to target completion of the CEPA negotiations by the end of 2026. During their meeting in New Delhi, the leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in areas including energy and critical minerals.

The proposed agreement comes amid existing commercial ties between the two economies. India and Canada recorded approximately $8.66 billion in bilateral goods trade during the 2024-25 financial year. India’s exports to Canada accounted for around $4.22 billion during the period.

Indian exports to Canada span a diverse range of products. Key categories include pharmaceuticals, machinery and mechanical equipment, iron and steel products, electronics, organic chemicals, jewelry, gems and precious stones, clothing and textiles, seafood, engineering products and automobile components.

India also imports a variety of goods from Canada, including pulses, fertilizers, mineral fuels, wood pulp, gems and precious stones, aircraft components, machinery and metal scrap. In services, India’s information technology sector remains a significant contributor to exports to the Canadian market.

An early conclusion of the CEPA could provide a framework for expanding commercial engagement between the two countries. Both governments have expressed interest in increasing bilateral trade while creating additional opportunities for businesses and investors.

The ongoing negotiations therefore remain a key component of efforts to strengthen the broader India-Canada economic relationship.

At the same time, slower growth in imports helped reduce India’s merchandise trade deficit. The gap narrowed to $26.9 billion in August from $32 billion in July and approximately $27.2 billion during the same month a year earlier.

Exports excluding oil, gems and jewelry also performed strongly. Core exports increased 22.7% in August, compared with 14.9% growth in July. Shipments of gems and jewelry returned to positive growth, rising 0.7%, while oil exports surged 63.3%.

The United States remained an important destination for Indian goods, with exports to the US increasing 21.8% from a year earlier. India also recorded stronger shipments to Malaysia, Singapore and Japan.

However, exports to some West Asian markets declined. Shipments to the United Arab Emirates fell 26.1%, while exports to Saudi Arabia decreased 17.5%. The declines came amid disruptions affecting trade activity in the region.

Agricultural exports also contributed to the overall performance. Higher shipments of rice and marine products supported the sector, while exports of meat, dairy and poultry products continued to register double-digit growth.

India’s imports rose 14.1% year over year to $70.7 billion in August, slowing from 17.5% growth in July. The moderation was partly linked to a sharp decline in gems and jewelry imports, which fell 34.8%. Gold imports alone dropped 57.7%.

Core imports increased 18.9%, while oil imports continued to expand, recording 25.8% growth during the month.

Services trade provided additional support to India’s external account. The preliminary services surplus stood at approximately $17.5 billion in August, slightly below the $17.6 billion recorded in July but higher than the $15.6 billion surplus reported a year earlier.

Looking ahead, Crisil Intelligence expects crude oil prices to average between $88 and $93 per barrel during fiscal year 2027. It also projects India’s current account deficit to widen to 1.5% of GDP in FY27, compared with 0.6% in FY26.

The August figures underline the continued strength of India’s export performance, while the moderation in imports helped ease pressure from the merchandise trade gap.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, has emphasized that artificial intelligence will achieve widespread adoption in India only when it provides tangible value to everyday people and businesses.

Speaking at the Ideas4India forum in Seattle, Kwatra said India’s AI journey must reflect the country’s distinct economic and social circumstances. He cautioned technology leaders against assuming that approaches successful in the United States would automatically produce similar results in India.

Kwatra pointed to small businesses to explain the importance of practical outcomes. A neighborhood grocery store, for instance, would be willing to spend money on an AI-based service only if it generated a clear benefit for the business. For him, this illustrates why the broader success of AI should be measured by what it enables people to accomplish rather than by technological sophistication alone.

The ambassador also referred to India’s digital public infrastructure as an example of technology gaining acceptance because it addresses real-world needs. He argued that discussions about whether a country is creating or consuming technology should also account for its stage of development and the immediate priorities of its population.

According to Kwatra, AI is likely to emerge across multiple layers of India’s economy, but its expansion will be shaped by what society can effectively adopt and what existing infrastructure can support. Financing will similarly depend on whether AI investments translate into meaningful results, he said.

Kwatra highlighted responsibilities for both the government and private sector. Policymakers will need to consider issues such as sovereign AI capabilities, data governance and the circumstances under which Indian data could be used to train models internationally. At the same time, Indian companies will have an important role in determining the country’s ability to build advanced AI systems, including large language models.

The ambassador also recognized the contribution of Indian-origin technology executives in strengthening India’s global image and development story.
