India has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, recording more than 6.5 million rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana within just 104 days. The achievement highlights the growing acceptance of residential solar energy and the country’s efforts to expand access to cleaner electricity. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced the development during a session titled Rooftop Solar as a Catalyst for the Global Energy Transition at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi. According to the minister, more than 100,000 rooftop solar systems are being installed every six days, demonstrating increasing participation from households in India’s clean energy movement.

The country’s renewable energy infrastructure has also expanded considerably over the years. India’s installed electricity generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources has reached 310 gigawatts (GW), with solar power accounting for 172 GW. This represents remarkable growth compared with the approximately 3 GW of installed solar capacity recorded before 2014, reflecting the country’s accelerating investment in renewable energy.

Delhi is also strengthening its efforts to encourage household-level solar adoption. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that financial incentives provided by the central government, combined with additional subsidies from the Delhi administration, have helped make rooftop solar systems more accessible to residents. The state government has established an ambitious target of bringing rooftop solar installations to 200,000 households by March 2027.

The Union Cabinet has approved a $296.05 million Capital Expenditure Support Scheme to Promote Critical Mineral Processing, marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s domestic mineral processing industry and reducing dependence on imported critical minerals.

The scheme, approved under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be implemented over five years, from FY2027 to FY2031. It aims to establish domestic processing capabilities for strategically important minerals, particularly lithium and nickel, while developing resilient supply chains to support India’s growing industrial and technological requirements.

Under the initiative, the government will provide capital subsidies covering 30% of eligible investments for establishing four critical mineral processing facilities. These will include two lithium processing plants, each with a minimum capacity of 30,000 tonnes, and two nickel processing plants, each with a minimum capacity of 50,000 tonnes. Nickel processing is also expected to facilitate the recovery of cobalt as a by-product, further strengthening domestic mineral availability.

The financial assistance will be subject to specified limits for individual beneficiaries. Each lithium processing project will be eligible for maximum capital support of $52.60 million, while nickel processing beneficiaries can receive up to $94.69 million each. The funding structure is designed to encourage private investment in capital-intensive processing infrastructure and improve the commercial viability of domestic projects.

Beneficiaries will be selected through a two-stage competitive process involving technical qualification followed by financial bidding. Two beneficiaries will be selected for each mineral based on the least-cost criterion. Financial incentives will be released in three instalments linked to the achievement of predefined project milestones, ensuring that government support is aligned with implementation progress.

The scheme is expected to benefit several strategically important sectors, including electric mobility, battery energy storage systems (BESS), electronics, defence and speciality steel. Lithium and nickel are essential inputs for advanced battery technologies and various industrial applications, making their domestic processing increasingly important as India expands its electric vehicle ecosystem and clean energy infrastructure.

India’s dependence on imported critical minerals remains a key challenge for its manufacturing ambitions and energy transition. By encouraging domestic processing capacity, the government aims to improve supply chain security, promote value addition within the country and reduce exposure to international supply disruptions and price volatility.

The initiative also supports the broader objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat by encouraging private-sector participation, attracting investments in advanced mineral processing technologies and creating a stronger domestic industrial ecosystem.

With a targeted investment framework and milestone-based financial support, the scheme represents an important policy intervention in India’s efforts to secure critical mineral resources. Its successful implementation could strengthen the country’s position in the global battery and advanced manufacturing supply chain while supporting long-term economic growth and strategic self-reliance.

Indian-American Democrat Jyot Singh has made history by winning Georgia’s House District 97, becoming the first Sikh American elected to the Georgia State Legislature. His victory in the November 3 elections marks a significant milestone for the Indian-American and Sikh communities in the United States.

Singh defeated Republican Yassin Moghazy in a constituency covering parts of Gwinnett County, including Duluth, Norcross, Peachtree Corners and Berkeley Lake.

Celebrating his victory, Singh shared a message on social media, saying, “We won!!! Thank you Georgia! I’m honored to be your representative-elect in HD-97.”

The son of Indian immigrant parents, Singh grew up in Norcross in a working-class family. He began earning money at 15 to support his family and experienced the financial challenges faced by many immigrant households.

A graduate of Gwinnett County public schools, he later attended Yale University on a full scholarship, earning a degree in Global Affairs in 2021.

Singh has described his political journey as a commitment to the community that shaped him. His Sikh faith, particularly the principles of seva (selfless service) and sarbat da bhala (well-being of all), has influenced his approach to public service.

He has pledged to champion equality, justice and the interests of ordinary Georgians in the state legislature.

A longtime political organiser and strategist, Singh has worked on gubernatorial and legislative campaigns and served as a press secretary. He also founded Blue Husky Group, a political and strategic consulting firm.

His work in education advocacy includes supporting efforts that helped secure $1.4 billion for Gwinnett County Public Schools through the renewal of E-SPLOST, a local sales tax dedicated to educational improvements.

Singh’s election represents an important breakthrough for Sikh-American political representation in Georgia. His journey from an immigrant household to elected office also highlights the growing participation of Indian Americans in American public life.

Indian Americans have made significant gains in the 2026 US elections, with at least 30 candidates winning state legislative seats across the country. The results also strengthened Democratic control in Michigan and Arizona, opening opportunities for Indian-American lawmakers to take up key legislative leadership positions.

Of the 41 Indian-American candidates who contested state legislative elections, 30 won, while two were leading in races yet to be officially called. Women accounted for half of the successful candidates, highlighting their growing participation in American politics.

In Michigan, Ranjeev Puri won re-election with approximately 66 per cent of the vote as Democrats regained control of the state House. He is now in contention to become the first Indian-American and Sikh Speaker of the Michigan House.

Arizona also witnessed a significant victory as Priya Sundareshan retained her Senate seat with around 66 per cent of the vote. Democrats gained control of both legislative chambers, with Sundareshan potentially seeking the position of Senate President.

Among the historic victories, Jyot Singh won Georgia’s 97th House District, becoming the first Indian-American and Sikh-American elected to the state’s legislature, according to Indian American Impact. In Texas, Pooja Sethi won House District 47, becoming the first Indian-American woman elected to the Texas Legislature.

Other notable winners included Nabeela Syed in Illinois, Lisa Kaul in New York, Ram Villivalam, Jay Chaudhuri, Arvind Venkat, Anita Somani and Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox. Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller also secured re-election alongside Governor Wes Moore.

Indian Americans recorded victories in several local government contests as well, including county commissions, city councils and education boards.

However, prominent Republican Vivek Ramaswamy lost the Ohio gubernatorial race to Democrat Amy Acton. Several other Indian-American candidates also faced defeats in legislative and local contests.

The election results underline the expanding political influence and representation of the Indian-American community across the United States, with candidates making their presence felt at state and local levels.

Indian American Democrat Dr. Amish Shah has won the election for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, defeating Republican candidate Jay Feely and turning a previously Republican-held seat in favor of the Democrats. His victory marks a historic achievement, as he is set to become the first Indian American to represent Arizona in the US Congress.

Indian American Impact, a political organization dedicated to increasing Indian and South Asian American representation in public office, congratulated Shah on his electoral success. The organization revealed that it invested and mobilized more than $355,000 in support of his campaign, which was among the most closely contested House races in the country.

Chintan Patel, executive director of Indian American Impact, praised Shah’s grassroots campaign and highlighted the extensive outreach he undertook to connect with voters. According to Patel, Shah personally visited more than 28,000 homes, engaging residents on concerns such as rising living expenses and the growing cost of healthcare.

Drawing on his experience as an emergency room physician, Shah made affordable healthcare and reducing financial pressures on families central themes of his campaign. Patel also noted that Arizona’s 1st District was included in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red to Blue initiative, which focuses on competitive Republican-held seats that Democrats aim to win.

Established in 2016, Indian American Impact has supported more than 200 candidates nationwide through endorsements, financial contributions, grassroots campaigning, and voter engagement initiatives. The organization reports that it has directed more than $20 million toward political candidates and related efforts.

India and Guyana have taken steps to deepen their bilateral partnership, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announcing an extension of a $500 million Line of Credit for infrastructure and development projects in the South American nation. The announcement followed his meeting with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026.

Sharing details on X, Jaishankar said the discussions focused on reviewing progress in bilateral relations, particularly following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Guyana in 2024. The extended financial assistance will support projects involving roads, healthcare, and defense infrastructure. Both countries also signed agreements covering the supply and installation of manufacturing systems and grant assistance for Quick Impact Projects. Additional arrangements will promote collaboration in Digital Public Infrastructure and the development and operation of a UPI-like payment system in Guyana.

Modi’s November 2024 visit marked the first trip by an Indian prime minister to Guyana in 56 years. During the visit, he received the country’s highest national honor, the Order of Excellence.

Diplomatic engagement has continued to strengthen since then. In October 2026, India’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Chinmoy Naik, presented his credentials to President Ali in Georgetown. Both sides emphasized expanding cooperation across various sectors and exploring opportunities in areas where considerable potential remains untapped.

Earlier, in August, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita attended celebrations marking 60 years of Guyana’s independence and six decades of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to interact with India’s Asian Para Games 2026 contingent at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi. The meeting will take place at around 4:30 pm, with the Prime Minister also addressing the gathering.

The interaction follows India’s best-ever performance at the continental sporting event held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. A total of 97 Indian para-athletes won 114 medals, comprising 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze, surpassing the previous record of 108 medals at the 2023 Hangzhou edition.

Athletes, coaches, representatives of the Paralympic Committee of India and Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports officials are expected to attend.

Para-athletics led India’s medal tally with 65 medals, followed by para-badminton with 16 and para-swimming with 11. India also secured medals in archery, shooting, table tennis, powerlifting and judo.

Among the standout performers, Sumit Antil successfully defended his javelin gold, while sprinter Simran Sharma won gold in both the women’s 100m and 200m T12 events, setting Games records. Shooter Mona Agarwal also claimed gold in the women’s 50m rifle three positions SH1 event with record scores.

The Games also celebrated remarkable achievements across generations, with 50-year-old Jehan Dorab Madan becoming India’s oldest medallist at the event after winning bronze in para-table tennis.

India’s 114-medal performance marks a major milestone for the country’s para-sports movement. The Prime Minister’s interaction is expected to recognise the athletes’ achievements and their contribution to India’s growing presence in international para-sports.

Indian-American politician Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayoral election, marking a significant development in the city’s political landscape. Raman, who has served on the Los Angeles City Council since winning her first election in 2020, entered the mayoral contest in February despite having publicly expressed support for Bass just weeks earlier. The election highlighted contrasting political visions, with homelessness, affordable housing, and public safety emerging as central campaign issues.

The candidates attracted support from different political organizations. Bass received endorsements from influential groups, including the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and the county’s Democratic Party. Raman, meanwhile, secured backing from the Democratic Socialists of America and transportation advocacy organization Streets For All. Their campaign strategies also reflected different voter priorities. Bass focused on older residents, visiting senior centers in neighborhoods such as Northridge and West Adams. Raman concentrated on younger voters, engaging with communities at bars, nightclubs, and college campuses while advocating a change in City Hall leadership.

Homelessness became one of the election’s defining issues. In Maryland, Democratic Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller won another four-year term, receiving 62.55 per cent of the vote, according to state election results. Their victory allows the two leaders to continue their administration for a second term.

Following the results, Miller thanked voters for their support in a post on social media. She expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in her and Moore, acknowledging the people and communities across Maryland who had supported their re-election.

In Wisconsin, Attorney General Josh Kaul defeated Republican challenger Eric Toney to secure a third term in office. Kaul, whose father is of Indian origin, has served as the state’s attorney general since 2019. His new term is scheduled to begin in January 2027. Toney conceded the contest on election night.

Meanwhile, in New York, Republican Saritha Komatireddy lost her challenge against Democratic incumbent Letitia James, who secured a third term as state attorney general.

Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, had campaigned against James’s leadership of the attorney general’s office. She raised concerns about public safety and criticised what she described as the politicisation of the office.

The results reflected different outcomes for candidates with Indian connections in important statewide contests. While Miller and Kaul secured fresh mandates, Komatireddy’s defeat meant that James would continue in the New York attorney general’s office for another term.
