Indian-American educator Pia Dandiya is running for the US House of Representatives from Florida’s newly redrawn 22nd Congressional District in the 2026 midterm elections. She secured the Democratic nomination in the district and is set to face Republican candidate Casey Askar in the November general election.

Born and raised in Palm Beach County to parents who immigrated from India, Dandiya began her career as a teacher before becoming a high school principal. She later served as a White House Fellow at the Department of Education and worked in public-sector innovation at Apple.

Dandiya initially entered the race in Florida’s 21st Congressional District but moved to the newly configured 22nd District following changes to the state’s congressional map. The new district covers parts of South Florida and includes areas across Broward, Palm Beach, Collier and Hendry counties.

In the Democratic primary, Dandiya defeated attorney Kaysia Earley, receiving about 69 per cent of the vote. Casey Askar won the Republican primary, setting up the November contest for the congressional seat.

Dandiya has highlighted education, affordability and support for working families among the issues central to her campaign. Her campaign biography also points to her experience in education, government and technology as part of her professional background.

Her campaign has described her candidacy as an effort to expand opportunities for families and strengthen public education. If elected, Dandiya would become Florida’s first South Asian American member of Congress, according to reporting on her campaign and candidacy.

Montana is exploring expanded cooperation with India in advanced technology, aerospace, agriculture and scientific research, as the US state looks to strengthen commercial and academic ties between the two countries.

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte announced the areas of interest during his visit to India with a delegation of 36 representatives from higher education and advanced technology sectors. According to an IANS report, the delegation is holding discussions with Indian businesses and educational institutions to identify opportunities for joint research, product development and economic growth.

Quantum technology and photonics are among the leading areas under consideration. Gianforte said institutions and businesses in both Montana and India are pursuing work in these fields, creating opportunities for universities to collaborate on research and for private companies to develop new technologies. He noted that Montana institutions invest hundreds of millions of dollars in research relevant to these sectors.

Aerospace is another potential area for closer cooperation. Gianforte pointed to the connection between India’s use of Boeing aircraft and Montana’s role in manufacturing aircraft components. He said this existing industrial link could create opportunities for businesses in both countries to expand their partnerships.

The delegation is also examining opportunities in precision agriculture, where technology can help farmers improve productivity. Montana’s School of Agriculture is represented on the visit, reflecting the importance of agricultural research and innovation in the proposed collaboration. Other areas being explored include defense technology and bioscience.

Alongside technology and research, Gianforte emphasized the importance of stable trade relations between India and the United States. He said US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor had indicated that the two countries were approaching a bilateral trade agreement.

According to Gianforte, a trade deal could provide businesses with greater predictability and support longer-term commercial relationships. He particularly highlighted trade in pulse crops, noting that fluctuations in India’s purchasing patterns have affected agricultural trade. He called for reciprocal and fair trade arrangements that give businesses in both countries greater confidence.

India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman began an official visit to Singapore from October 9 to 11, focusing on strengthening bilateral economic relations, attracting investment and expanding cooperation across strategic industries.

During the three-day visit, Sitharaman is scheduled to meet Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, according to an official statement.

The discussions will focus on advancing the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and implementing outcomes from the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR). Key areas of cooperation include trade, investment, digital financial connectivity, capital markets, taxation, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, workforce development and aviation.

Sitharaman will also interact with Singaporean and international investors, financial institutions and business executives through a roundtable with hedge fund and portfolio fund managers, alongside government-to-business meetings. These engagements are intended to facilitate discussions on India’s economic growth, emerging investment opportunities and changes in the global financial environment.

Her itinerary also includes individual meetings with senior executives from prominent investment firms, banks, healthcare companies and other international businesses. Organizations represented in the scheduled engagements include the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC), Temasek Holdings, DBS Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, British International Investment, IHH Healthcare, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, B Capital, HPS Investment Partners and Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken. She is also expected to meet representatives of Mitsui & Co. and TPG.

India is looking to strengthen Singaporean participation in its investment landscape through platforms such as the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). These institutions could offer additional channels for Singapore-based investors to participate in Indian projects and investment funds.

Singapore remains a major source of foreign investment for India. According to the official statement, cumulative foreign direct investment inflows from Singapore reached approximately $194.68 billion between April 2000 and March 2026. Singaporean institutional investors, including GIC and Temasek, also maintain substantial investments across India’s economy.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump after receiving the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, recognizing his leadership and contributions to the technology industry. India aims to expand its 5G user base from approximately 550 million to 1 billion by 2030 while preparing to take a leading role in developing next-generation 6G technology. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the target while inaugurating the 10th India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026, according to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF).

Scindia highlighted the country’s progress in telecommunications, noting its transition from lagging in 4G adoption to advancing alongside the global technology ecosystem in 5G and aspiring to lead in 6G. India’s 5G rollout has been described as one of the fastest globally.

The Bharat 6G Alliance has brought together 90 institutions and established a portfolio of 7,700 patents, including 4,400 international patents, according to the report. India has also secured international recognition for its telecommunications initiatives. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council accepted the country’s proposal to host its Plenipotentiary Conference in 2030. In 2024, India hosted the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly for the first time, marking the largest gathering of its kind held outside Geneva in the organization’s history.

India’s digital infrastructure has grown considerably since the first India Mobile Congress in 2017. Broadband subscriptions have risen from 60 million to more than 1.1 billion, while the number of mobile subscribers has reached approximately 1.35 billion. Lower data prices have helped support this expansion, with the cost of 1 GB of data falling from Rs. 268 in 2014 to Rs. 8, according to IBEF.

Digital financial services have expanded alongside connectivity. Indian-American student Sai Sri Valli Mogilineedi has been named one of 30 national finalists in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, a leading U.S. STEM research competition for middle school students. She was selected from 1,997 entrants representing communities across the country.

Now a student at Cumberland Valley Ninth Grade Academy in Pennsylvania, Sai Sri Valli conducted the research as an eighth-grader at Mountain View Middle School in Mechanicsburg. Her project focuses on developing a controlled-release system for medications used to address Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD.

The idea was inspired by her grandfather’s experience with persistent heartburn and the limited duration of relief provided by conventional over-the-counter antacids. This led her to investigate whether an antacid could be designed to release its active ingredient more gradually and provide longer-lasting relief.

For her project, titled “A Novel Controlled Release System for GERD Drugs Using Immobilization Techniques,” Sai Sri Valli experimented with calcium carbonate, a common active ingredient in antacids, and incorporated it into calcium alginate beads. She used sodium alginate, a substance derived from algae, to create the gel-like structure and then examined how the beads behaved under different pH conditions.

Her experiments found that the calcium alginate beads released calcium carbonate more slowly under acidic conditions similar to those found in the stomach, while the release was faster in a basic solution. The findings indicated that the approach could potentially support a more controlled delivery of the antacid.

The research received recognition at the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair and helped advance Sai Sri Valli to the national Junior Innovators Challenge. The competition selects young researchers for their scientific creativity, research skills and ability to address real-world challenges.

As a national finalist, Sai Sri Valli is set to participate in Finals Week in Washington, D.C., where the finalists will take part in hands-on STEM challenges and present their research to judges. The competition features more than $100,000 in awards, including the $25,000 Thermo Fisher Scientific ASCEND Award.

Beyond science, Sai Sri Valli participates in Science Olympiad and has interests in ecology and forensics. She also plays the violin and oboe, performs Kuchipudi, and volunteers with Caitlin’s Smiles, helping prepare craft kits for children in hospitals. She has expressed an interest in pursuing a career in surgery, reflecting her broader interest in human anatomy, physiology and disease.

At 14, Indian-American student Aryash Shyam has added a national literary honor to an already impressive record of achievements in science, technology and communication.

Shyam, a ninth-grade student from Pennsylvania, was named one of four middle-school winners of the 2026 John Estey Student Writing Competition presented by the American Writers Museum in Chicago. He received the recognition for “The Weight of Lead,” a historical fiction story set in a Philadelphia print shop on July 4, 1776. The award carries a $1,000 prize, and his winning work has been published by the museum.

The story examines the tension between the founding ideals of the United States and the unequal realities surrounding them. It follows Will, a 13-year-old printer’s apprentice helping set the type for the Declaration of Independence, as he begins to confront the different prospects for freedom faced by another young boy.

The writing recognition adds to Shyam’s accomplishments across several fields. He has developed interests in space biology, gene editing, artificial intelligence, robotics and science communication, reflecting a broad curiosity that extends beyond literature.

Earlier this year, Shyam received a Genes in Space Junior Scientist Award for a proposal exploring a compact CRISPR-based diagnostic system designed to function in microgravity. His project examines whether a freeze-dried CRISPR-Cas13 system could be activated with water and produce a fluorescent signal when target RNA is detected.

Shyam has also received recognition for scientific writing. He won first place in the high-school category of the 2026 American National Standards Institute Student Paper Competition for a paper examining how medical connector standards can help prevent dangerous errors. In addition, all three essays he submitted to the 2026 John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize were shortlisted.

His interests also extend into technology and innovation. Shyam created GreenBeam, an artificial intelligence-powered robotic system that uses computer vision and precision targeting to identify and treat invasive weeds without routinely applying chemical herbicides. The project earned Pennsylvania State Merit recognition in the 2025 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Beyond research and engineering, Shyam is active in science communication. He hosts “Teen Scientist,” a monthly program on WDIY 88.1 FM, where he speaks with researchers and innovators about subjects including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, space, mathematics and climate innovation. He has also created a documentary exploring the science and ethics of gene editing and founded RacingGecko, a STEM-learning platform for younger students.

His latest literary achievement highlights the connection between his interests in history, science and communication. Through “The Weight of Lead,” Shyam explores questions of freedom and equality while demonstrating the ability to engage with complex historical ideas at a remarkably young age.

India has joined the United States and 13 other economies in a joint initiative aimed at addressing structural excess capacity and production, as concerns grow over market distortions affecting global trade and domestic industries.

The 15 participating economies signed a joint ministerial statement following discussions among G20 Trade Ministers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The statement calls for countries to address excess production and end non-market policies and practices that distort markets and contribute to overcapacity.

The participating economies include India, the United States, Argentina, Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Poland, Türkiye and the United Kingdom.

The statement highlights structural excess capacity as a growing challenge for the global economy. The participating countries said persistent overproduction can distort prices and production patterns, discourage market-based investment, restrict competition and make domestic industries more vulnerable.

The initiative initially focuses on several key manufacturing sectors, including automobiles and electric vehicles, batteries, chemicals, foundational semiconductors and solar panels. The countries plan to cooperate through dedicated sectoral platforms to examine excess production and develop measures to address its impact.

India’s participation comes after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized during the G20 Trade Ministers’ meeting that concerns over excess capacity should be addressed through a WTO-compliant and evidence-based approach. India has also stressed the importance of avoiding measures that unfairly place the burden of global trade adjustments on developing economies.

The participating economies said excess capacity can undermine domestic production, affect employment, discourage new investment and weaken market-based competition. They also warned that excessive dependence on a single source of production can increase economic vulnerabilities and expose trading partners to supply disruptions.

The countries have agreed to share non-confidential information and data on structural excess capacity, its impact on identified sectors and measures being taken to mitigate its effects. Technical-level discussions are expected to continue as the participating economies develop a framework for future cooperation.

The initiative marks a broader effort among major economies to coordinate their responses to trade distortions while protecting domestic industries and workers. The participating countries also invited other economies to join the discussions and contribute to efforts aimed at strengthening market-oriented competition.
