Outgoing United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative to India, Takayuki Hagiwara, met with Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sibi George in New Delhi as he concluded his diplomatic assignment in the country.

During the farewell meeting, George expressed appreciation for Hagiwara’s efforts in advancing FAO’s initiatives in India and recognized his contributions to strengthening cooperation between the organization and the country. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the secretary thanked Hagiwara for his dedicated service and wished him success, good health, and continued achievements in his future responsibilities.

Hagiwara has been associated with the FAO since 2003 and has built extensive experience in natural resources management over the past 25 years. Before assuming the role of FAO Representative in India, he served as Regional Programme Leader at the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, overseeing programs focused on sustainable agricultural development and resource management.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled a series of rail and road infrastructure projects valued at approximately $637 million during a visit to Jalandhar, Punjab. The initiatives are aimed at improving transportation networks, enhancing passenger facilities, and supporting economic growth across the region.

Among the major announcements was the inauguration of 75 modernized railway stations spread across 20 states under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Redeveloped at an estimated cost of $183 million, the stations now feature upgraded passenger amenities while incorporating architectural elements inspired by local culture, heritage, and regional traditions. Four of these stations are located in Punjab, including Jalandhar Cantonment, S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali), Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Sri Anandpur Sahib.

Despite being one of the world’s largest food producers, only about 12% to 13% of India’s agricultural output currently undergoes processing, leaving considerable room for further development.

Industry experts believe that improving processing levels will not only reduce food waste but also enhance product quality, create higher-value offerings, and strengthen India’s position in global food markets. The transition from a supply-driven model to one focused on consumer preferences is expected to reshape the industry over the next several years.

The report also highlights changing consumer habits, with shoppers increasingly seeking healthier, premium, and convenient food options. Products categorized as health and functional foods are growing at an annual rate of 15% to 20%, significantly outpacing the overall food market. This shift is encouraging manufacturers to invest in innovation and develop products that align with evolving dietary preferences.

During the event, Andhra Pradesh Industries, Commerce, and Food Processing Minister T.G. Bharath announced the state’s plan to attract approximately $3.16 billion in investments into the food processing sector by 2029. The United States has delivered another MH-60R Seahawk helicopter to the Indian Navy, marking another step forward in the expanding defense partnership between New Delhi and Washington. The latest arrival follows a major defense agreement finalized in late 2025, when India approved a sustainment package valued at approximately $946 million for its fleet of 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. The package is designed to ensure long-term maintenance and operational readiness while improving interoperability between the Indian and US navies. The initiative also supports broader maritime security objectives across the Indian Ocean region.

India originally acquired the helicopters through the US Foreign Military Sales program in 2020. The Indian Navy formally inducted the multi-role aircraft into service in March 2024 at INS Garuda in Kochi, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing modernization efforts.

Former Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi previously praised the helicopter fleet, describing the MH-60R as a highly capable and reliable platform. President Droupadi Murmu is set to begin a week-long State visit to Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania from July 19 to 25, reinforcing India’s commitment to expanding diplomatic and economic partnerships across Eastern Europe. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the tour reflects New Delhi’s growing focus on strengthening bilateral relations with the region.

The first stop will be Moldova, where President Murmu will arrive on July 20 at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. The visit marks a historic occasion as it will be the first time an Indian President has traveled to the country. During her stay, President Murmu will hold delegation-level discussions with President Sandu and meet Parliament President Igor Grosu. She is also scheduled to interact with members of the Moldova-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, address the India-Moldova Business Forum, and engage with the Indian diaspora.

The MEA stated that India and Moldova enjoy cordial relations and have significant opportunities to expand cooperation in sectors including agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, information technology, and education. President Murmu will then travel to North Macedonia from July 21 to 22 at the invitation of President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova. The final leg of the tour will take President Murmu to Romania from July 23 to 25. The visit will be the first by an Indian President in more than 30 years. She will meet President Nicușor Dan, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, Senate President Mircea Abrudean, and Chamber of Deputies President Sorin Grindeanu. The President will also engage with the Romania-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, address the India-Romania Business Forum, and interact with the Indian community.

The ship’s participation covered four major East Coast ports, including Norfolk, Baltimore, New York and Boston, where it became a symbol of India’s naval heritage and maritime excellence.

The voyage was part of international maritime events, including SAIL 250 and the International Naval Review 250, organized to commemorate the historic anniversary of the United States. INS Sudarshini’s presence reflected India’s commitment to strengthening global maritime cooperation and promoting friendship between the two nations.

The Indian Consulate General in Boston also recognized the vessel’s participation in SAIL Boston 250, calling it a representation of India’s rich maritime culture, naval discipline and expanding cooperation with the United States. A media briefing was conducted during the Captain’s Reception held aboard INS Sudarshini, where officials discussed the importance of the ship’s participation.
