Our physical bodies are made up of what we feed them – food, water, the air we breathe. Likewise, our minds are made from everything we read, converse about, listen to, and watch.

Today, in the name of knowledge and entertainment we are absorbing negative information through social and print media, cinema and television. This becomes part of our minds, making it difficult to create right thoughts and responses to difficult situations.

Suppose a family member has not returned home from the office until very late at night. Thoughts of an accident or other unpleasant scenes come naturally as we wait. It feels difficult to assume everything is fine. When we fill our minds with news and visuals of violence, accidents, crime and calamities, wrong thoughts are readily created.

We can emotionally detox the mind and empower it through simple everyday practices:

The first few thoughts upon waking are of gratitude. Connect to God and give gratitude in your own way. Thank your mind and body for sustaining you. Then give gratitude to everyone and for everything around you.

Spend three minutes creating affirmations for your tasks, health, relationships, habits or projects. Visualize vividly on the screen of your mind that everything is being executed to perfection. The combined power of affirmation and visualization make it easier to manifest.

Freshen up and meditate for 20 minutes, each morning. Connect to God, take His love and healing energy, and visualize that energy radiating to your mind and body. In this state you will be able to emerge your innate, original qualities of happiness, love and compassion.

Study spiritual knowledge or self-improvement messages for 20 minutes to fill yourself with purity and positivity. Spiritual knowledge enables your mind to create pure thoughts and make the right decision to create elevated sanskars (habits).

Exercise for 40 minutes. Be mindful; pay attention to your breath. Inhale acceptance, exhale expectations. Inhale love, exhale anger. Right energy radiating to your body creates good health.

Pause for a minute every hour to check your thoughts. If there is any wrong thought, replace it immediately. You can also revise your morning affirmations along with visualising them.

Take care that every thought, word, and behavior throughout the day is right. Since thoughts are the foundation of our words and actions, it is really our thoughts that create our destiny. Each thought is a karma.

Shift from anger to compassion; resentment to forgiveness; doubt to trust; competition to co-operation; criticism to appreciation; expectations to acceptance.

Set clear work-home boundaries. At the end of workday, switch off your mind completely from work. Do not carry thoughts from the day’s events or pressures. Spend quality time with family.

Always carry an emotional first-aid kit. Uplifting messages on your phone or a good book will stop the flow of negative thoughts.

Delete negative and wasteful messages on social media apps without reading them. Sense the quality and do not consume biased opinions, satire, judgments, slander or gossip. Otherwise, negativity starts coloring your thoughts and feelings.

Food and water have vibrations and deeply influence our minds. Eat Sattvic (pure, life-giving) food prepared and consumed in a pure state of mind. Eat mindfully, creating pure and positive thoughts of gratitude. Avoid gadgets, distractions and negative conversations at mealtime.

Money carries an energy of the way you work – how honest, ethical, caring and compassionate you are. It needs to come with the blessings of your employer, co-workers or client, since it is used to buy food and comforts for your family.

Just before bedtime, spend 15 minutes reading positive or spiritual messages. The positive energy calms your mind, ensuring your last thoughts for the day are not scattered around negativity. Avoid news, newspapers, TV shows or gadgets, an hour before you sleep.

In 2015, at Kartavyapath in Delhi, 35,000 people performed Yogasanas together.

He pointed out that destinations like Rishikesh, Kashi, and Kerala have become popular for yoga tourism, attracting people from all over the world to learn authentic yoga. This trend has boosted related sectors such as hospitality, tourism, and apparel, creating new employment opportunities for the youth.

PM Modi also mentioned Charlotte Chopin, a 101-year-old yoga instructor from France, who was honored with the Padma Shri for her lifelong dedication to promoting yoga despite never visiting India. This highlights the growing global interest in yoga, with numerous universities and institutions conducting research and publishing papers on the practice.

Highlighting the global journey of yoga, PM Modi noted the efforts of the AYUSH department in India, which established the Yoga Certification Board to standardize and promote yoga practice. He expressed optimism that this enthusiasm for yoga would inject new energy into the region’s tourism sector.

This year’s International Day of Yoga theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscores the practice’s importance in promoting individual well-being and societal harmony. Since 2015, PM Modi has led the International Day of Yoga celebrations at various iconic locations, including Kartavya Path in Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Lucknow, Mysuru, and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The post “World seeing new Yoga economy”: PM Modi on Yoga Day in Srinagar first appeared on Global Indian News Network.

Yoga, with its holistic approach to fitness, continues to be the preferred method for those looking to tone and nourish their bodies. Despite the myriad of workout options available today, yoga stands out for its ability to address the entire body and promote overall well-being. For many, the quest for a toned midsection leads them to specific yoga asanas designed to target and flatten the belly.

Yoga Asanas for a Toned Tummy

Among the various yoga poses, several are particularly effective in focusing on the abdominal region. These poses not only help in achieving a toned stomach but also address common digestive issues like constipation, indigestion, and bloating. The following asanas are especially suitable for beginners and are known for their ability to strengthen the core and improve overall digestive health.

The Bhujangasana, or Cobra Pose, is a staple in yoga routines aimed at strengthening the abdominal muscles and relieving tension in the lower back. This pose involves lying face down, placing the hands under the shoulders, and lifting the upper body while keeping the lower body grounded.

Similarly, the Dhanurasana, or Bow Pose, may seem simple but provides a rigorous workout for the abs. In this pose, one lies on the stomach, bends the knees, and holds the ankles while lifting both the hands and feet, along with the thighs and chest.

Another powerful pose for burning belly fat is the Kumbhakasana, commonly known as the Plank Pose. This pose involves lying face down and then lifting the body onto straightened arms and toes, holding the position to engage the core muscles.

The Naukasana, or Boat Pose, is excellent for targeting the side and front abdominal muscles. This pose involves lying on the back, lifting the hands and legs simultaneously to create a V-shape, and holding the position while practicing deep breathing.

The Ustrasana, or Camel Pose, is more challenging and should be performed with caution, especially for those with back issues. This pose involves kneeling with knees hip-width apart, arching the back, and reaching back to hold the heels.

Finally, the Eka Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana, or One-Legged Downward-Facing Dog Pose, is great for balance and strengthening the abs. Starting in a downward-facing dog position, one leg is lifted and straightened, then lowered under the abs repeatedly.

Another effective pose is the Vasisthasana, or Side Plank Pose. This variation of the plank pose involves tilting the body to one side while lifting the opposite arm, providing an intense core workout.

Consistency is Key

To see the best results, these yoga poses should be practiced consistently, preferably in the morning. Consistency and dedication to the practice are essential, and incorporating deep breathing techniques will enhance the effectiveness of the asanas. To avoid monotony, alternating between different poses can keep the routine engaging. With regular practice and commitment, these yoga poses can help achieve a toned and healthy belly.

The post Flatten Your Belly with These 6 Transformative Yoga Poses first appeared on Global Indian News Network.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed International Yoga Day, celebrated annually on June 21, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014. Highlighting yoga’s holistic approach to health and well-being, Modi emphasized its potential to foster unity among people and cultures. The proposal received overwhelming support, and on December 11, 2014, the UN General Assembly declared June 21 as International Yoga Day. We chose the date because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and holds special significance in many parts of the world.

Yoga, an ancient practice originating from Hinduism in India, encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines aimed at achieving harmony between the mind and body. Over the years, yoga has transcended cultural and geographical boundaries, becoming a global phenomenon. The first International Yoga Day in 2015 saw participation from 177 countries, reflecting the widespread acceptance and enthusiasm for yoga.

Countries that have actively embraced and celebrated International Yoga Day include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Germany, France, Australia, South Korea, and many more. The Prime Minister and other dignitaries often attend the main event of mass yoga sessions organized in various cities in India. The celebration extends to schools, universities, parks, and public spaces, with millions participating in yoga sessions worldwide.

The benefits of yoga are manifold, contributing to its global popularity. Physically, yoga enhances flexibility, strength, and posture. Regular practice can alleviate chronic pain, reduce inflammation, and improve cardiovascular health. Mentally, yoga is known for its stress-relieving properties. Techniques like pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation help calm the mind, improve concentration, and promote mental clarity. Spiritually, yoga fosters a sense of inner peace and self-awareness, encouraging a balanced and mindful approach to life.

Yoga’s emphasis on holistic well-being aligns with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, particularly in promoting positive health and well-being (Goal 3). The global celebration of International Yoga Day underscores the universal appeal of yoga and its potential to bridge cultural divides, promoting peace, harmony, and a healthier planet.

International Yoga Day, initiated by Prime Minister Modi and endorsed by the UN, is more than just a celebration of a physical practice. It is a testament to the enduring relevance of ancient wisdom in modern times, fostering unity and well-being across the globe.

Engaging in balance training, regardless of age, can yield numerous benefits such as memory improvement and injury prevention. These activities contribute to better spatial cognition, particularly beneficial for athletes, while enhancing postural control, a crucial aspect for sports performance. Incorporating yoga balance poses into daily routines can effectively address these needs.

A study in the Slovenian Journal of Public Health demonstrated the positive impact of daily yoga practice on balance among older adults. Yoga, being predominantly performed barefoot and involving standing poses, promotes heightened awareness of foot positioning and weight distribution. This attention to the feet serves as a foundation for stability, crucial in balance-oriented activities.

Yoga’s emphasis on proprioception and mind-body connection aids in balance enhancement. Moreover, it fosters core strength, stability, flexibility, and mobility—qualities essential for overall balance. Core stability training, supported by research, is particularly emphasized in yoga, offering benefits for fall prevention, especially among older individuals.

The integration of yoga poses like Mountain, Tree, and Warrior III into one’s practice can significantly improve stability. These poses challenge various muscle groups while enhancing body awareness and alignment. Practicing balance poses regularly not only strengthens muscles but also refines proprioceptive abilities, vital for maintaining stability in daily activities.

Safety precautions are crucial, especially for beginners. Proper alignment and progression under the guidance of an instructor reduce injury risks. Utilizing props and embracing imperfections during practice fosters a safe learning environment. Overall, balancing exercises, including yoga, offer a holistic approach to enhancing stability and promoting overall well-being across all age groups.

1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana):
Mountain pose serves as a foundational posture for enhancing stability and body awareness. Begin by standing tall with feet hip-width apart and arms hanging naturally at the sides, palms facing inward. Roll the shoulders down and back, ensuring alignment of shoulders, hips, and ankles. Distribute weight evenly across all four corners of the feet and maintain a steady gaze forward. Hold the position for 5 to 10 breaths, focusing on grounding and alignment.

2. Tree Pose (Vrksasana):
Tree pose challenges balance by shifting weight onto one leg while maintaining stability. Begin by standing with your feet separated at the width of your hips. Shift weight onto one leg and place the sole of the opposite foot on the inner thigh or calf, avoiding the knee joint. Press palms together at the heart center or extend arms overhead for an added challenge. Engage core muscles and find a focal point to aid balance. Maintain the position for 5 to 10 breaths, then change sides.

3. Warrior III (Virabhadrasana III):
Warrior III strengthens the core and improves balance by requiring stabilization in a single-leg stance. Begin in Mountain pose and shift weight onto one leg while extending the opposite leg behind the body. Maintain a straight line from head to heel, with arms extended forward or alongside the body for balance. Keep hips squared and engage abdominal muscles to support the lower back. Maintain the position for 5 to 10 breaths, then change sides.

4. High Lunge Pose (Utthita Ashwa Sanchalanasana):
High lunge pose builds strength and stability in a dynamic, offset stance. Transitioning from standing, move one foot forward into a lunge, ensuring proper alignment with the front knee directly over the ankle. Engage the core and lift the torso upright, reaching arms overhead with palms facing each other. Press firmly through the front foot and back heel to stabilize the pose. Maintain the position for 5 to 10 breaths, then change sides.

5. Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana):
Standing forward fold not only tests your balance but also offers a stretch to the hamstrings and a gentle elongation to the spine. Start in Mountain pose and hinge forward at the hips, allowing the torso to fold over the legs. Keep knees slightly bent to avoid strain on the lower back. Allow the head to hang heavy and relax the neck. Engage the quadriceps to support the knees and maintain stability. Hold for 5 to 10 breaths, focusing on relaxation and release.

6. Chair Pose (Utkatasana):
Chair pose strengthens the legs and core while improving balance and endurance. Begin in Mountain pose and lower the hips as if sitting back into an imaginary chair. Keep weight in the heels and knees aligned over the ankles. Reach arms overhead with palms facing each other or pressed together. Engage the abdominal muscles and lengthen the spine. Hold for 5 to 10 breaths, feeling the activation of leg muscles and stability in the pose.

7. Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana):
Half moon pose challenges balance and strengthens the legs, core, and stabilizing muscles. Begin in a standing position and transition into Warrior II pose with one foot forward. Shift weight onto the front leg and reach the opposite hand toward the floor or a block, extending the other leg parallel to the ground. Engage the core and gaze upward to maintain balance. Maintain the position for 5 to 10 breaths, then change sides.

8. Wide-Legged Forward Fold (Prasarita Padottanasana):
In wide-legged forward fold, you stretch the hamstrings, enhance balance, and benefit from a stable foundation. Begin in a standing position with feet spread wide apart. Hinge forward at the hips and fold the torso toward the floor, keeping the spine long and chest open. Allow the arms to hang freely or clasp opposite elbows for a deeper stretch. Engage the quadriceps and press through the outer edges of the feet to maintain stability. Hold for 5 to 10 breaths, focusing on relaxation and surrender in the pose.

The post Yoga Poses for Longevity: Improving Balance first appeared on Global Indian News Network.

Many students inquire about the calorie-burning potential of yoga asanas. Calorie burn is often associated with profuse sweating, a mechanism for eliminating toxins. High endurance poses demand energy expenditure, complemented by steady breathing for oxygenation and warming up.

Research conducted by the University of Pittsburgh, Duke University Medical Center, and University of Zurich implemented a six-month weight-loss program involving yoga sessions. Participants gradually increased from 20 to 60 minutes daily, resulting in significant weight loss and improved cardiovascular health. Harvard’s study indicated calorie burns ranging from 120 to 168 for varying body weights during 30 minutes of Hatha yoga.

Another study showcased reductions in body weight and fat percentage, alongside increased muscle mass, affirming yoga’s muscle-strengthening benefits.

Suryanamaskar stands out as a calorie-burning asana, with each set reportedly burning around 14 calories. Progressing to 12 sets daily for 25-30 minutes may yield a calorie burn of 250-350, depending on factors like weight and speed.

Phalakasana, or the plank pose, engages multiple muscles, particularly targeting the core and reducing belly fat. Low plank variations intensify calorie burn by engaging additional muscle groups.

Neuralink, the brainchild of Elon Musk, recently streamed a remarkable demonstration featuring Noland Arbaugh, a 29-year-old who became paralyzed following a diving accident. In this captivating video, which has garnered significant attention on social media, Bliss Chapman, a Neuralink engineer, proudly introduces Arbaugh as the first recipient of the groundbreaking Neuralink implant, affectionately referring to him as his inaugural “telekinetic friend.”

Arbaugh astounded viewers by effortlessly maneuvering a computer cursor with his mind, showcasing the functionality of the brain-computer interface (BCI) as he engaged in a game of chess. Drawing parallels to the iconic Jedi mind control depicted in the Star Wars saga, Arbaugh likened the experience to wielding ‘the Force’ over the cursor.

Expressing his gratitude for the newfound ability provided by the technology, Arbaugh recounted how he rediscovered the joy of playing video games, even delving into complex titles like Civilization 6, a feat he had previously deemed impossible due to his physical limitations.

Beyond gaming, Arbaugh highlighted the practical applications of the Neuralink implant, including reading and language learning. However, he noted the inconvenience of having to wait for the implant to recharge once its battery is depleted.

Despite acknowledging the early stage of development for this technology, Arbaugh emphasized its transformative impact on his life, underscoring how tasks once deemed unattainable are now within reach thanks to the implant.

In a lighthearted touch, Arbaugh revealed his Halloween costume plans, intending to dress up as Professor X from the X-Men series, a character renowned for his telekinetic abilities.

While Neuralink heralds this achievement as a significant step towards “telepathy” and seamless computer control through thought alone, independent verification and clarification on limitations remain pending. Notably, Neuralink faces competition in the form of Australia’s Synchron, which offers a less invasive alternative to skull surgery for brain-computer interfaces, with successful implantation reported in a patient the previous year.

The post Neuralink patient plays chess with mind first appeared on Global Indian News Network.
