The President of India has the authority to appoint 12 members to the Upper House of Parliament based on their outstanding contributions to various fields like arts, literature, sciences, and social services.
At 73, Sudha Murty is a distinguished philanthropist, author, and former chairperson of Infosys Foundation. Her husband, Narayana Murthy, is the founder of Infosys, and her son-in-law is UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Born in Shiggaon, Haveri District, North Karnataka, she excelled academically, graduating in engineering and earning distinctions throughout her academic journey.

Starting her career as an engineer at TELCO (now Tata Motors), Murty now leads Infosys Foundation and is a prolific writer in both English and Kannada. He claimed that for every rupee Tamil Nadu contributes in taxes, the Centre only allocates “28 paisa” to the state. This accusation was encapsulated in the phrase ’28 Paisa Modi’, coined by Udhayanidhi to target the Prime Minister and his administration. However, this statement has provoked a negative response from the BJP.

As the son of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi asserted the dominance of his party, the DMK, in Tamil Nadu, challenging PM Modi to spend 40 days campaigning in the state ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. He confidently predicted that despite PM Modi’s efforts, the BJP would not secure a single seat in Tamil Nadu. Udhayanidhi also accused PM Modi of deceit, claiming that his visits to Tamil Nadu coincided with election campaigns rather than times of crisis such as floods or cyclones.

These remarks drew swift condemnation from the BJP, with the state party chief deriding Udhayanidhi as a “failed actor” who rides on the coattails of his family’s political legacy. Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai dismissed Udhayanidhi’s political standing, asserting that he lacks merit beyond his familial connections and has not contributed meaningfully to society.

The post Udhayanidhi’s PM Modi remarks spark BJP backlash first appeared on Global Indian News Network.

In a media release, Subramanyam expressed excitement about the support, emphasizing his commitment to serving Northern Virginia’s growing South Asian population.

Subramanyam’s campaign reported a noteworthy achievement, raising over $270,000 in the fourth fundraising quarter within six weeks of entering the race. With more than $240,000 in cash on hand for the new year, Subramanyam acknowledged the substantial grassroots support and vowed to leverage his record of advocating for Northern Virginian families in addressing key issues.

Having announced his candidacy in November, Subramanyam pledged to tackle challenges such as prescription drug costs, gun violence, and price-gouging, aiming to break through Washington’s gridlock. In December, he faced opposition from MAGA extremists for defending reproductive rights, demonstrating resilience in upholding his pro-choice stance despite calls to ban him from houses of worship in Northern Virginia.

Virginia’s 10th District, characterized by its diversity, houses over 125,000 AAPI Virginians and is a significant battleground House district. Subramanyam, the first Indian-American, South Asian, and Hindu elected to the Virginia General Assembly, has actively represented AAPI and South Asian communities. He co-founded the Virginia AAPI Caucus, contributed to the establishment of Hindu Heritage Month in Virginia, and serves on the Virginia Minority Business Commission.

With a unique swearing-in ceremony on the Bhagavad Gita, Subramanyam brings a wealth of experience, including roles as a Capitol Hill aide, advisor to the Obama White House, elected official in Richmond, and volunteer EMT. The FEC fundraising reports for the fourth quarter are expected to be publicly released by January 31, 2024.

While Trump maintains his lead, Haley has made significant strides by consolidating much of the non-Trump vote. The poll results follow the endorsement of Haley by New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, who emphasized the state’s opportunity to lead the country forward.

According to the CBS poll, 29% of respondents expressed their preference for Haley in the Republican primary, compared to Trump’s 44%. In terms of readiness, 53% of GOP primary voters described Haley as prepared, only slightly trailing Trump at 54%. Other contenders in the race, including Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Chris Christie, received varying percentages of respondents describing them as prepared.

Haley received positive assessments for being likable and a reasonable GOP candidate from a large majority of GOP primary voters. However, she faced a slight setback in being perceived as a strong leader, with 41% of respondents describing her as such, whereas Trump and DeSantis received higher percentages.

The poll also revealed that 32% of respondents believe Haley could “definitely” beat President Joe Biden, who is seeking a second term. In alignment with this sentiment, Haley’s campaign released a video on December 19, where she criticizes Biden’s age and advocates for new leadership, emphasizing the need for term limits, mental competency tests, and a comprehensive plan to address challenges such as China and economic recovery.

Despite the logistical challenges, Ramaswamy remains motivated by the energetic crowds in Iowa, emphasizing that he is campaigning caffeine-free. The 38-year-old entrepreneur appreciates the earnestness of people attending his events, building a community and movement that transcends traditional campaign methods.

Ramaswamy values grassroots engagement, expressing a preference for connecting with caucusgoers in Pizza Ranches across the state rather than participating in cloistered mega-donor retreats. He attributes his success to a strong work ethic, emphasizing that luck is spelled W-O-R-K, a formula that has consistently worked throughout his academic, professional, and entrepreneurial journey.

While Ramaswamy’s intensive schedule may seem demanding, his team views it as essential for success as voters prepare to choose candidates in less than a month. Tricia McLaughlin, senior advisor and communications director for Ramaswamy, believes this approach is necessary to surprise and challenge the system, expressing confidence in being responsive and connected to the people they aim to represent.

Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase’s head, encourages even liberal Democrats to consider Haley over Trump, emphasizing her potential appeal.

Prominent figures like Charles Koch and investor Stanley Druckenmiller are backing Haley, significantly boosting her campaign funds. In December, a fundraiser in New York yielded over $500,000 in pledges from the city’s business elite. Initially cautious donors are now aligning with Haley, recognizing her impressive performance in debates and expressing concerns about the potential instability of another Trump presidency.

Haley’s stance on fiscal policies, including tax cuts, balanced budgets, and a higher retirement age, aligns with traditional Republican views. Business leaders appreciate her commitment to fiscal discipline and her governorship experience. Unlike Trump, she emphasizes addressing the national debt and interacts effectively with business leaders.

While Haley is not an isolationist and favors a tougher stance on China, her inclusive approach is gaining support even from some Democrats like Reid Hoffman. However, concerns arise about her perceived closeness to banks and billionaires, challenging her appeal to the GOP’s working-class base, a point raised in a recent debate by moderator Megyn Kelly.

Despite political differences with Trump, Haley’s rising popularity also reflects concerns about Trump’s electability. As she navigates accusations of being too closely tied to big business, Haley emphasizes accepting support from corporate figures while maintaining focus on her policies.

Despite stiff competition, the ruling party retained Madhya Pradesh and secured victories in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. In Telangana, the main Opposition party, Congress, emerged triumphant.

Jagdish Sewhani, President of the American India Public Affairs Committee in New York, hailed the results as a “reflection of the country’s mood,” attributing the wins to people voting for good governance and performance. He emphasized the trust in Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, foreseeing India becoming a $40 trillion economy in the next 25 years.

Viewing the recent state elections as a semifinal, Sewhani expressed confidence in the BJP’s success in the 2024 General elections. He urged supporters in the diaspora to actively campaign for the BJP and its candidates in the upcoming elections.

Other speakers at the celebration, including Dr. Narinder Kukar, Chintu Patel, Dr. Dipak Nandi, Sunil Hali, Amba Sharma, Dr. Urmilesh Arya, Satvinder Satta, Kulbir Singh, Indu Jaiswal, Anju Sharma, Pinki Jaggi, Dr. Pushp Bhansali, and Dr. Sanil Sarkar, echoed similar sentiments.

The debate featured a competitive face-off among four candidates—entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

Vivek Ramaswamy initially took the lead in speaking time, while Nikki Haley, although relatively silent, became the focal point for attacks from her fellow candidates. Ron DeSantis engaged in a close contest with Ramaswamy, emphasizing that speaking time alone shouldn’t be the sole metric for evaluating a candidate’s capabilities. The debate underscored the significance of persuasive arguments in shaping public opinion during the voting process.

Nikki Haley faced scrutiny for accepting corporate money and emerged as the primary target for criticism during the debate. Ramaswamy accused her of having a “corruption problem” and employed a visual aid, holding up a pad with “NIKKI = CORRUPT” written on it. He labeled her as “a puppet” and accused her of using “identity politics” as a deceptive tactic. In response, Nikki Haley dismissed these accusations, stating that it wasn’t worth her time to respond.

The debate opened with a barrage of allegations against Nikki Haley, with Ron DeSantis claiming she “caves anytime the left comes after her.” Nikki Haley defended her track record, refuting DeSantis’s allegations as lies. Ramaswamy also criticized Haley for aligning with donors, citing her involvement with Boeing after serving as the US ambassador to the United Nations.

The candidates collectively sought to hinder Nikki Haley’s momentum in the presidential debate. Haley’s ascendancy had been attributed to strong performances in previous debates and significant endorsements. Tensions escalated between Vivek Ramaswamy and Chris Christie, with accusations of shifting positions in the Ukraine war. Christie also questioned the candidates’ stance on sending US troops to Gaza, emphasizing a direct response.

As in previous debates, Chris Christie directed attention to former President Donald Trump, challenging his opponents on the lack of discussion around Trump’s Republican ticket hopes. Christie boldly asserted that Trump is “unfit” and likened him to Voldemort from J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series. The debate highlighted the intricate dynamics and disagreements within the Republican candidates, reflecting the complex landscape of their party.

Her campaign, rooted in the Democratic Party, prioritizes key issues like public safety, education, and healthcare. If successful in the 2024 elections, Kaul would be the second Indian-American woman in the House of Representatives, following Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. Notably, Susheela Jayapal, Pramila’s sister, has also entered the race for Congress from Oregon’s third Congressional District.

Fluent in eight languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Dari, Urdu, and Arabic, Kaul is the first Kashmiri-origin individual to run for Congress. Drawing from her extensive background in the national security sector, spanning the Pentagon, think tanks, and the defense industry, Kaul’s candidacy brings a unique perspective.

Education, healthcare, and public safety form the core pillars of Kaul’s campaign. Her focus on affordable and accessible healthcare aims to benefit small business owners, emphasizing concerns related to prescription drugs and specialist care. Additionally, ensuring safe neighborhoods, schools, and communities aligns with her commitment to public safety.

The 10th Congressional District in Virginia, with a significant Indian American and South Asian population, provides a strategic platform for Kaul’s candidacy. Her strong background in national security reflects in her commitment to a robust stance on counter-terrorism. Inspired by her father’s narratives about the Kashmir conflict during her childhood, Kaul expresses a profound interest in understanding and addressing issues in the region.

Kaul’s path to Congress started with a commitment to studying diplomacy, negotiation, political science, and conflict resolution, evident in her pursuit of three degrees. Her comprehensive approach to national and international issues reflects her commitment to a holistic understanding of governance.
