Scientists believe the solar material originated either from a slower-moving CME released on July 27 or from a weaker eruption that occurred on July 30. The interaction between the charged particles and Earth&#8217;s magnetic field produced vibrant displays across high-latitude regions, including northern Scotland and Scandinavia.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">NASA astronaut Jessica Meir shared a time-lapse video from the International Space Station showcasing brilliant green and red auroras sweeping across the planet. She described the experience as especially memorable because it was shared with Anil Menon during his first opportunity to witness such an intense auroral event from orbit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meir expressed her excitement on social media, saying she never grows tired of watching the northern lights from space. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Experts believe solar activity will continue through the first week of August, increasing the likelihood of additional auroral displays. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite his young age, Shyam has already built an impressive portfolio of scientific achievements. He developed a CRISPR-based diagnostic proposal designed for use in microgravity, earning recognition as one of only five recipients of the 2026 Junior Scientist Award through the Genes in Space program. His research demonstrated both scientific creativity and a strong interest in advancing biotechnology for future space missions.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In another notable project, he designed and programmed GreenBeam, an artificial intelligence-powered robot capable of identifying weeds and removing them with laser precision instead of chemical herbicides. To address this challenge, Kundu explored the potential of peanut shells, which are often discarded after agricultural processing.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Using a process known as biosorption, Kundu developed a material from peanut shells that can attract and capture pesticide residues from the surface of produce. The natural material works similarly to a filter, binding unwanted chemicals and potentially lowering the amount of pesticide residue remaining on fruits and vegetables.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beyond improving food safety, the project also promotes environmental sustainability by giving new value to agricultural waste. By repurposing peanut shells that would otherwise be thrown away, Kundu’s innovation supports waste reduction and encourages the use of natural materials for practical solutions.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kundu said she joined the 3M Young Scientist Challenge to further improve her invention and transform it into a product that could benefit people globally. This approach eliminates the need for large incisions, offering patients a less invasive option with the potential for quicker healing and fewer visible signs of surgery.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to Patel, conventional skull-opening procedures have long been the standard treatment for these types of tumors, making recovery more difficult for patients. Advances in surgical technology and imaging, however, have made it possible to safely access many tumors through the nasal cavity. He noted that when the tumor meets the necessary criteria, the minimally invasive method often provides surgeons with excellent access while improving the chances of complete removal.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The procedure was recently performed on US Marine Staff Sgt. Andy Archer, who had endured severe headaches for more than 15 years. After he began experiencing vision problems, doctors ordered an MRI scan that revealed a tumor measuring about 4.4 centimeters positioned near the pituitary gland and pressing against his optic nerve.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At Walter Reed Army National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, Patel and Miller successfully removed the entire tumor through the nasal passage. Patel designed the surgical pathway by skillfully navigating the complex anatomy of the nose while operating an endoscopic camera that delivered magnified, high-definition images throughout the operation. The enhanced visualization allowed Miller to precisely separate and remove the tumor while protecting nearby critical structures.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Patel emphasized that the procedure depends on close teamwork, explaining that each surgeon&#8217;s expertise complements the other&#8217;s throughout the operation. Their coordinated approach helped achieve a successful outcome for the patient.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Within just two days of surgery, Archer was sitting upright in the intensive care unit with no visible signs of major brain surgery. His vision had already started to improve, highlighting the potential benefits of the minimally invasive technique. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Damodaran’s proposal, called PS21, centers on advanced photonic technology designed to improve submillimeter space interferometry. If successful, the concept could significantly strengthen the performance of future space observatories, allowing scientists to capture more detailed observations of distant celestial bodies and expand our understanding of the universe.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Charania’s research focuses on improving astronaut survival in extremely cold environments. His concept proposes integrating radioisotope-powered heating systems into spacesuits, helping astronauts remain protected during the Moon’s extended nights, which last nearly two weeks, as well as during missions to other icy regions in deep space.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">NASA selected 18 proposals for this year’s NIAC Phase I program, committing approximately </span><b>$3.2 million</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to support the studies. Each project is eligible to receive up to </span><b>$0.18 million</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> over a nine-month period to evaluate its technical feasibility. While these projects are not official NASA missions, they represent promising concepts that could shape future exploration efforts.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The program also supports a diverse range of ideas, including technologies for exploring lunar lava tubes, extending the lifespan of scientific instruments on Venus, studying Saturn’s rings, collecting samples from planetary rings, developing power systems for interstellar spacecraft, mapping continents on distant exoplanets, improving black hole observations, detecting gravitational waves, and strengthening space debris monitoring.</span></p>

The surgical team performed the procedure earlier this month, successfully removing more than 99% of the tumor while leaving behind a very small portion that was considered too dangerous to remove completely.</span></p>

After establishing the surgical route, Patel used a high-definition endoscopic camera to provide detailed visuals of the operating area, allowing Miller to carefully remove the tumor while protecting nearby critical structures.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Patel explained that for appropriately located tumors, accessing the brain through the nose can provide better surgical access and reduce the need for more invasive procedures. The technique allowed the medical team to achieve an effective removal while minimizing risks for the patient.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A small portion of the tumor remained attached near the optic nerve because removing it could have caused serious complications, including vision loss or other neurological damage. The doctors determined that leaving the remaining fragment was the safest option and believed it had a very low chance of future growth.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To complete the operation, the surgeons repaired the skull base using a tissue graft taken from Archer’s leg to close the surgical area. The Defense Department reported that just two days after surgery, Archer showed no outward signs of undergoing a major brain procedure.
