Photo: X.com

The Indian-American community, a rapidly growing and increasingly influential demographic in the United States, has long been characterized by its strong commitment to education, family values, entrepreneurship, and economic success. These are principles that, in many ways, align closely with the core ideology of the Republican Party. However, despite this apparent ideological alignment, a substantial majority of Indian-Americans continue to support the Democratic Party. This paradox raises a key question: Why do so many Indian-Americans, who seem to embody many conservative values, vote predominantly Democratic?

To understand this phenomenon, we must first look into the ideological foundations of both the Republican and Democratic parties, examining how these compare to the values and interests of Indian-Americans.

Additionally, it is crucial to explore the historical and sociopolitical context that has shaped the voting patterns of this community over time.

Indian-American Conservative Values and Alignment with the Republican Party

Many Indian- Americans, particularly those who immigrated from India in the late 20th century, are inherently conservative in their social values. These values include a strong emphasis on family structure, personal responsibility, education, and entrepreneurship. The traditional Hindu philosophy of Dharma, which stresses duty, family, and societal roles, shares significant overlap with conservative principles often supported by the Republican Party.

Social and family conservatism

Indian-Americans, as a community, tend to hold family values in high regard. Multigenerational households, respect for elders, and the preservation of cultural traditions are central tenets of their way of life. This focus on family structure and the importance of community often resonates with the Republican Party’s emphasis on family values and traditional social structures.

Additionally, Indian culture generally promotes self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and hard work—principles that align closely with the Republican ethos of free markets and limited government intervention. Many Indian-Americans have succeeded in building small businesses and contributing significantly to the US economy, which is another factor that traditionally resonates with Republican economic policies focused on deregulation and tax cuts for businesses.

Entrepreneurship and Economic Success

Indian-Americans have become one of the most successful ethnic groups in the United States, excelling in fields such as technology, healthcare, and business. The emphasis on educational attainment and economic self-sufficiency is a defining characteristic of this community. The Republican Party’s pro-business stance, support for low taxes, and focus on fostering entrepreneurial spirit would seemingly be a natural fit for Indian-American voters.

In addition to professional success, many Indian-Americans have embraced the capitalist ideals of self-made wealth and individual achievement. Their upward mobility, often achieved through hard work and perseverance, mirrors the Republican Party’s advocacy for personal responsibility, individualism, and the belief that government should not overly intervene in the economy.

Immigration Policy in the U.S.

Immigration remains a pivotal issue in U.S. politics, particularly for Indian Americans, many of whom have entered the country through legal channels. The majority of Indian immigrants have followed stringent procedures, whether through family reunification or the H-1B visa program, which grants work permits to highly skilled professionals, predominantly in technology and healthcare sectors.

Indian Americans tend to favor merit-based immigration, a principle that aligns more with the policies advocated by the Republican Party. The GOP promotes an immigration system focused on skilled labor, emphasizing the need to attract talent through merit rather than a lottery-based system. The H-1B visa, which is critical for many Indian professionals, has become a central part of this policy. Indian Americans, who have significantly contributed to the U.S. economy, appreciate the Republican stance on promoting legal immigration and improving pathways for skilled workers.

On the other hand, the Democratic Party often faces criticism for not taking a firmer stance on illegal immigration. Many feel that their policies appear more lenient on border control, creating concerns over the potential strain on resources and public services. Indian Americans, who went through the legal immigration process, sometimes view this as unfair.

While the Democratic Party supposedly champions diversity and inclusivity, Indian Americans, especially those in professional fields, find common ground with Republican calls for stricter, merit-based immigration policies that recognize and reward the skills they bring to the U.S.

Unemployment and welfare benefits

Indian-Americans, one of the most successful immigrant groups in the U.S., often refrain from utilizing unemployment and welfare benefits, despite being eligible for them. Deeply ingrained cultural values such as self-reliance, hard work, and education lead many Indian-Americans to prioritize personal responsibility over seeking government assistance. This ethos aligns with the conservative belief in limited government intervention, a stance commonly upheld by the Republican Party.

Many Indian-Americans come from backgrounds where economic security is hard-earned, making the notion of relying on public welfare less appealing. Instead, they focus on entrepreneurship, higher education, and career advancement. Additionally, social stigma surrounding welfare use in certain segments of the community further discourages participation in these programs.

While the community’s reluctance may reflect cultural pride, it also highlights the disconnect between immigrant communities and the broader debates on welfare policies, which remain contentious in U.S. politics, particularly among Republicans.

Indian-Americans Leadership in the Republican Party

Indian-Americans have made remarkable strides in American politics, with notable figures like Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy rising to prominence, particularly within the Republican Party. This trend raises an intriguing question: why have Indian-Americans reached higher leadership positions in the GOP compared to the Democratic Party, despite the latter’s broader appeal to minority communities?

The Republican Party, especially in recent years, has sought to diversify its leadership to better reflect the nation’s evolving demographics. Figures like Haley and Ramaswamy represent a new face of the party, blending conservative values with the immigrant success story. Haley, a former Governor of South Carolina and U.N. Ambassador, and Ramaswamy, a successful entrepreneur and GOP presidential candidate, embody principles that resonate with many first-generation Indian-Americans—economic conservatism, meritocracy, and a focus on entrepreneurship.

Moreover, the Republican platform’s emphasis on family values and economic opportunity aligns with the cultural ethos of many Indian-American communities. For individuals like Haley and Ramaswamy, the GOP provides a space where their views on economic policy, education, and national security intersect with personal values rooted in discipline and self-reliance.

Kamala Harris’s rise to becoming a Democratic presidential candidate is a testament to her multifaceted identity, yet her Indian heritage played a less central role in her political ascent. Born to an Indian, Hindu mother and Jamaican, Christian father, Harris grew up in a predominantly black neighborhood in Oakland, California, where her African-American roots were more visible in her public persona. She also grew up attending services at a Black Baptist church. Her political career, from District Attorney to U.S. Senator, largely resonated with African-American communities, whose struggles she directly championed.

Though Harris acknowledges her Indian heritage, frequently sharing fond memories of her Tamil-speaking mother and visits to Chennai, it has not been a significant driving force in her political narrative. Her identity as a Black woman became the focal point in her presidential and vice presidential campaigns.

The Trump Effect

In the 2020 U.S. presidential election, an intriguing shift occurred within the Indian-American community: more of them voted for President Trump compared to 2016. While Trump’s presidency was marked by controversy on many fronts, his relationship with India and its Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, stood out as a significant factor in attracting Indian-American voters.

Major events like the “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston, which drew over 50,000 Indian-Americans, symbolized Trump’s warm relationship with Modi. The event underscored the camaraderie between the two leaders, highlighting their shared interests in boosting U.S.-India relations. Trump’s subsequent visit to India, where he received a grand welcome from Modi and the Indian public, further solidified his pro-India stance. This connection played a role in winning over a portion of the Indian-American community, who viewed Trump as more attuned to India’s needs than Kamala Harris, despite her Indian heritage.

Harris, as Vice President, has a complex identity with ties to India, yet many Indian-Americans feel that Trump’s direct engagement with Modi and his emphasis on strengthening U.S.-India relations outweighed Harris’s cultural connections. Trump’s emphasis on trade and defense ties with India resonated with voters who prioritize U.S.-India relations.

While his controversial policies were divisive, his outreach to India undeniably won him favor among segments of the Indian-American community, contributing to his increased support in the 2020 election.

As the political landscape in the United States undergoes significant changes, with Kamala Harris stepping into the spotlight as a presidential candidate, questions arise about what her administration could mean for various stakeholders, including India, Indians, and the Indian American community. Despite the widespread celebration of Harris’ Indian heritage, her actions and political inclinations indicate that a Harris presidency may not yield significant benefits for these groups. Here’s why.

Connection to Her Indian Roots

Kamala Harris, the daughter of an Indian mother from Tamil Nadu, has a mixed cultural heritage that includes both Indian and Jamaican influences. However, throughout her political career, Harris has not prominently highlighted her Indian roots. For instance, despite her Indian heritage, Harris has primarily aligned herself with the African American community, both in identity and advocacy. This has left many in the Indian American community feeling neglected and questioning her commitment to her Indian heritage.

Indrani Bagchi, a foreign policy commentator, notes that Harris has “deliberately downplayed” her Indian roots. While this may be a strategic political decision, it certainly does not endear her to those who had hoped she would champion issues relevant to India and its diaspora. Her focus has often been on issues affecting African Americans, which, while crucial, has left her Indian background completely out of the narrative.

Lack of Engagement with the Indian American Community

One would expect someone of Indian descent to have stronger ties with the Indian American community, especially in regions with a significant Indian population, such as California, where Harris built her political career. However, prior to her rise as a prominent national figure, Harris rarely participated in events organized by the Indian American community in San Francisco or elsewhere. This lack of engagement has not gone unnoticed.

One could view Harris’s perceived distance from her Indian roots and the Indian American community as a missed opportunity to forge a more diverse coalition of support. For many Indian Americans, who are proud of their heritage and actively contribute to their communities, Harris’s aloofness is disappointing. It raises concerns about her willingness to advocate for issues that matter to them if elected president.

A tense relationship with India

India-U.S. relations have historically oscillated depending on the administration in power, with recent years witnessing a more robust partnership. Some worry that a Harris administration may not be as friendly to India as her predecessors. This concern stems from Harris’s occasional comments on sensitive Indian issues, such as Kashmir. Her criticism of India’s revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, which many saw as a domestic matter, did not sit well with the Indian government and its supporters.

Moreover, Harris has shown support for U.S. politicians like Representative Pramila Jayapal, who are vocal critics of India’s domestic policies. India’s external affairs minister canceled a meeting with U.S. lawmakers over Jayapal’s inclusion, prompting Harris to defend Jayapal on social media as a clear signal of her stance. Such actions indicate that a Harris administration might be more inclined to publicly criticize India on human rights and democracy issues, a departure from the more nuanced approach seen in other U.S. administrations.

A Missed Opportunity for Diplomacy

One significant point of critique is Harris’s lack of proactive diplomacy toward India. While she has visited countries in Africa and Latin America, her absence in India raises eyebrows. Despite her Indian heritage, she has yet to visit India as Vice President. This absence suggests a lack of prioritization of India in her foreign policy agenda, which could continue if she becomes president.

While she has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, their interactions have lacked the warmth and personal chemistry that Modi shares with leaders like former President Donald Trump. During his presidency, Trump’s grand visit to India was a testament to his efforts to solidify a personal and strategic partnership with India. In contrast, Harris’s approach has been more reserved, leaving doubts about whether she would invest the same level of effort in nurturing India-U.S. relations.

A Confrontational Stance on India’s Domestic issues.

A Harris administration is likely to uphold the Democratic Party’s emphasis on human rights and democratic values. While these are undoubtedly important issues, India has often viewed external criticism of its internal matters with suspicion and resentment. The Biden administration has managed to maintain a balance between advocating human rights and strengthening strategic ties with India. However, given Harris’s past comments and her alignment with progressive politics, there is a risk that she might adopt a more confrontational stance on India’s domestic issues.

Such an approach could strain the warming ties between the two nations, especially when the U.S. is seeking a strong partner in the Indo-Pacific to counterbalance China’s influence. A Harris presidency could bring a shift in focus, placing greater emphasis on human rights concerns over strategic alliances, potentially complicating the bilateral relationship.

A Missed Opportunity for a Stronger India-U.S. Partnership

Ultimately, the concerns about a Harris presidency are not just about her lack of emphasis on her Indian heritage or her political stance on India’s internal matters. It is also about the missed opportunities to strengthen the India-U.S. partnership further. The Biden administration, with its experienced foreign policy team, has laid a solid foundation for India-U.S. relations, focusing on strategic issues such as security in the Indo-Pacific, economic cooperation, and counterterrorism. Harris’s lack of a strong foreign policy portfolio and her focus on domestic issues could lead to a deprioritization of India in the U.S.’s foreign policy agenda.

A Cautious Approach Needed

While Kamala Harris’s rise to the presidency would be historic and a moment of pride for many, it is essential to consider what her leadership would mean for India, Indians, and Indian Americans. Her previous lack of engagement with her Indian roots, her limited interaction with the Indian American community, and her stance on India’s domestic issues all point towards a more cautious and perhaps critical approach to India. As such, while the strategic relationship between the U.S. and India will likely continue, it may not reach the levels of warmth and cooperation seen in recent years under a Harris administration.

For those invested in the future of India-U.S. relations, a careful and watchful approach is necessary. Building strong bilateral ties requires not only strategic interests but also a deep understanding of each other’s cultural and domestic contexts—a trait that Harris, despite her Indian heritage, has not fully exhibited.

PM Modi’s Ukraine Visit: A Genuine Peace Effort Amidst Western Media’s Negative Bias

In a world increasingly polarized by political allegiances and media narratives, genuine efforts towards peace often face skepticism and misinterpretation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine serves as a prime example of this phenomenon. His journey, intended to be a diplomatic endeavor aimed at peace, has been received with a mixed response from international observers, with a significant portion of the Western media portraying it through a lens of negativity and cynicism. However, it is essential to look beyond the biased coverage to understand the true intentions and potential impact of Modi’s visit.

A Historic Diplomatic Initiative

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ukraine marked a historic step in India’s foreign policy, illustrating a proactive stance in international diplomacy. For a leader of a major global democracy to engage directly in the conflict-ridden region underscores India’s commitment to playing a constructive role on the world stage. This move aligns with India’s long-standing principle of advocating for peaceful resolution of conflicts and its consistent support for dialogue over discord. By engaging with both Ukraine and Russia, Modi demonstrated a willingness to listen and offer India’s beneficial offices for facilitating peace—a rare stance in today’s divided world.

Modi’s visit to Ukraine was not a mere symbolic gesture; it was a calculated diplomatic move. His discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revolved around understanding the ground realities, listening to Ukraine’s concerns, and offering a balanced perspective that could bridge the gap between the conflicting parties. Modi’s approach was not to take sides but to emphasize the need for dialogue and de-escalation. In doing so, he reinforced India’s position as a neutral entity focused on peace, despite external pressures to align with one faction over the other.

Modi’s Track Record in Diplomacy

Prime Minister Modi has shown a consistent dedication to international peace and stability. From his active participation in the BRICS summit to his engagement with the United Nations, Modi has emphasized the need for reforming global institutions to make them more representative and inclusive. His outreach to Ukraine, therefore, is not a sudden departure from India’s foreign policy but a continuation of his efforts to bring about a more balanced and fair global order.

In Ukraine, Modi’s message was clear: dialogue is the only way forward. He highlighted India’s own experiences managing diverse populations and conflicts, and he offered India’s assistance in facilitating dialogue between Ukraine and Russia. This is a significant step, as India shares historical ties with both countries, having maintained strong relations with Russia while also building partnerships with the European Union and the United States.

A Balanced Perspective Amidst Bias

Despite the clarity of Modi’s intentions, the Western media’s portrayal of his visit has been less than favorable. Headlines have often suggested skepticism about India’s neutrality or questioned the effectiveness of Modi’s diplomatic efforts. This negative bias stems partly from the complex geopolitical dynamics that have seen Western powers align more directly with Ukraine against Russian interests. Therefore, we view any third-party involvement that doesn’t explicitly support this alignment with suspicion.

However, such skepticism overlooks the reality of India’s unique position in global geopolitics. India, as a country with historical ties to Russia but growing strategic partnerships with the West, holds a potential role as a mediator that few other nations can claim. Modi’s visit was an attempt to leverage this unique standing, offering a fresh perspective on a conflict where entrenched positions have so far hindered any meaningful progress towards peace.

India’s approach under Modi’s leadership has always been one of strategic autonomy—maintaining positive relations with all major powers without compromising its national interests. This diplomatic balancing act is precisely what the Ukraine situation demands. By engaging both Kyiv and Moscow, Modi sought to open channels for dialogue that could eventually lead to de-escalation and negotiation, a necessity for any sustainable peace.

The Power of Non-Alignment

The criticism from Western media also reflects a broader misunderstanding of the principles of non-alignment that countries like India advocate. Non-alignment does not imply indifference or a lack of moral clarity; rather, it signifies a commitment to peace and stability through impartial engagement. Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ukraine was in the spirit of this philosophy, offering a non-partisan platform for dialogue.

India’s history with the Non-Aligned Movement, its role as a peacekeeper in various international conflicts, and its advocacy for multilateralism provide it with the credibility to mediate in such complex situations. Modi’s visit to Ukraine was not about making headlines but about fostering an environment where peace talks can be considered viable. It was a step towards breaking the cycle of violence and distrust that has plagued the region.

Moving Beyond Media Narratives

While Western media narratives have often focused on Modi’s relationship with Russia and India’s purchase of Russian oil, they have failed to acknowledge the larger picture—India’s consistent call for a peaceful resolution. Modi’s visit to Ukraine was an affirmation of India’s stand against violence and unilateral actions. It was about sending a message that India, as a responsible global player, is willing to contribute to peace in any way possible.

The simplistic binary framing of the conflict by some Western media outlets does a disservice to the complexities of international diplomacy. India’s nuanced approach, as demonstrated by Modi’s visit, acknowledges the multifaceted nature of global conflicts and the importance of engaging all parties involved. By visiting Ukraine, Modi reinforced India’s commitment to peace, showing that genuine diplomatic efforts go beyond mere rhetoric and require ground-level engagement.

A Step Towards Peace

We should view Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ukraine as a sincere attempt to contribute to peace. It was a step towards breaking the deadlock in a conflict that has far-reaching implications beyond the immediate region. Rather than casting aspersions on India’s intentions or capabilities, it is crucial for the global community to support and recognize such diplomatic efforts.

In a world where divisions are deepening and the voices of reason are often drowned out by the noise of political rhetoric, leaders like Modi, who take the initiative to mediate and advocate for peace, should be encouraged. India’s role in Ukraine might not result in immediate breakthroughs, but it sets a precedent for other nations to engage in dialogue and diplomacy. The path to peace is long and arduous, but every genuine effort, like Modi’s visit, brings us a step closer to that ideal.

The events surrounding the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and the subsequent installation of Muhammad Yunus as the head of an interim government have stirred considerable controversy and raised critical questions about the extent of foreign influence in Bangladesh’s domestic affairs. As we dissect these occurrences, it becomes increasingly clear that the United States has played a significant role in shaping the political trajectory of Bangladesh, a role that bears the hallmarks of a carefully orchestrated coup rather than a natural political transition.

The Prelude to a Regime Change
Sheikh Hasina’s warning to her allies on May 24, 2024, about an imminent conspiracy against her government was more than a mere political statement; it was a reflection of the geopolitical pressures she had been under for years. Her prediction of a plot by a foreign power to remove her from office, which tragically came true, highlights the precarious nature of leadership in nations where external powers hold significant sway. The specific allegations of Hasina facing threats from U.S. representatives demanding the creation of a “Christian state” and the establishment of a U.S. military base on Saint Martin Island serve as chilling reminders of the coercive methods used to subjugate sovereign nations.

Hasina’s swift departure to India amid violent protests, which bore the markings of a well-coordinated effort to destabilize her government, signals the gravity of the situation. In reality, a coalition of actors, possibly incentivized or even orchestrated by foreign entities, backed the protests ostensibly led by students. The fact that these protests escalated so quickly and with such intensity suggests a level of organization and support that could only come from a well-resourced and determined entity—likely the U.S. State Department.

Muhammad Yunus: A Pawn or a Player?
The appointment of Muhammad Yunus as the interim leader of Bangladesh is not just a coincidence; it is a strategic move that aligns with the interests of the United States. Yunus, a Nobel Laureate and a figure with deep connections to influential American figures like Hillary Clinton and George Soros, has long been a favored candidate of the United States for leadership in Bangladesh. His history with the Clinton Foundation and his financial contributions to it position him as deeply embedded within the power networks that extend beyond Bangladesh’s borders.

The relationship between Yunus and the Clintons is emblematic of the broader issue of how personal and financial ties can influence international politics. The 2017 letter from Charles E. Grassley, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, to then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sheds light on the extent to which the Clintons were willing to leverage their power to protect Yunus. The letter’s allegations that Hillary Clinton used her position as Secretary of State to pressure the Bangladeshi government into halting a corruption investigation into Yunus underscore the intersection of personal relationships and political power.

The United States State Department’s Unseen Hand
The involvement of the U.S. State Department in Bangladesh’s political affairs, particularly in relation to the Grameen Bank investigation, reveals the lengths to which the United States will go to protect its interests and those of its allies. The pressure exerted on Sheikh Hasina’s government to drop the investigation into Yunus, as well as the subsequent threats made to her son, Sajeeb Wazed, of an IRS audit if he did not comply, are indicative of a strategy that combines diplomatic pressure with personal intimidation.

These actions are not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern of U.S. intervention in the political processes of sovereign nations. Similar accusations of U.S. meddling in domestic affairs to install leaders more amenable to American interests recur in the case of Bangladesh. The fact that the U.S. State Department, under multiple administrations, has consistently supported Yunus, even when faced with credible allegations of financial misconduct, suggests a calculated effort to maintain influence in Bangladesh.

The Grameen Bank controversy
The Grameen Bank Commission’s findings against Yunus and his associated entities are damning. The commission’s report, which revealed significant irregularities and a lack of transparency within the Grameen Bank’s operations, stands as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in microfinance institutions that operate on a global scale. The involvement of international figures like George Soros, who provided financial backing for Yunus’ ventures, adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

The commission’s investigation into the creation of Grameen Telecom and the illegalities surrounding it further complicates Yunus’ image as a benevolent social entrepreneur. The transfer of funds between various entities associated with Yunus raises serious questions about these organizations’ governance and accountability. The commission’s recommendation to suspend Grameenphone Ltd.’s telecommunication license, though ultimately not implemented, was a clear indication of the severity of the issues at hand.

The role of George Soros
In the context of Bangladesh, we cannot overlook George Soros’ involvement, a figure often associated with using his wealth to influence political outcomes. Soros’ financial support for Yunus and his organizations, coupled with the strategic objectives of the U.S. in the region, point to a concerted effort to mold Bangladesh’s political landscape in a way that serves specific interests. Soros’ history of funding political movements, as well as his role in the creation of Grameenphone Ltd. through the Soros Economic Development Fund, are examples of how financial power can translate into political influence.

The Broader Implications
This coup has far-reaching implications. For Bangladesh, the removal of Sheikh Hasina and the installation of a U.S.-backed leader could mean a reversal of the progress that the nation has made under her leadership. Despite its flaws, Hasina’s government has achieved significant economic and social advancements. The potential rollback of these achievements under Yunus’ interim government could lead to instability and unrest, particularly among the segments of the population that have benefited from Hasina’s policies.

The situation in Bangladesh serves as a cautionary tale for the region about the dangers of foreign intervention in domestic politics. The precedent set by the U.S. in Bangladesh could embolden other nations to exert similar pressures on smaller, less powerful countries. This could lead to a destabilization of the geopolitical order in South Asia, with far-reaching consequences for regional security and economic stability.

A Call for Sovereignty
The story of Bangladesh’s recent political upheaval is a stark reminder of the fragility of sovereignty in a world where powerful nations wield their influence with little regard for the autonomy of others. The United States’ involvement in the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and the installation of Muhammad Yunus is a clear example of how foreign powers can shape nations’ destinies in pursuit of their own interests.

As we reflect on these events, it is critical that we advocate for the protection of national sovereignty and the right of nations to determine their own political futures without external interference. The Bangladesh case should serve as a wake-up call to the international community to scrutinize powerful nations’ actions and hold them accountable for their interventions in the affairs of other sovereign states.

The people of Bangladesh must choose their leaders and future. Any attempt to impose leadership from outside, no matter how well-intentioned, undermines the democratic principles that should be the foundation of any nation’s political system. The world must support Bangladesh in its quest for true sovereignty, free from the shadows of foreign power.

The United States, often hailed as the beacon of democracy and a global leader in gender equality, has a peculiar distinction: in over 200 years of its history, it has yet to elect a woman as president. This fact stands in stark contrast to several countries around the world, including some that are considered less developed or even conservative, where women have successfully risen to the highest political office.

Countries like India, Israel, Sri Lanka, and even Pakistan, an Islamic nation with deep-rooted patriarchal traditions, have all seen women leaders at their helm. Indira Gandhi in India, Golda Meir in Israel, Sirimavo Bandaranaike in Sri Lanka, and Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan are some of the prominent names that come to mind. These women not only broke through the glass ceiling in their respective nations but also left a significant impact on their country’s history and global politics.

Finland and New Zealand have each elected women to the highest leadership positions three times. Several other countries, including Poland, Ireland, Lithuania, France, Finland, and Canada, have also had women in leading roles. Angela Merkel, who became Chancellor of Germany in 2005, holds the distinction of being the longest-serving female leader in her country’s history. Similarly, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf made history as the President of Liberia in 2006, a position she held until 2018. In more recent years, Giorgia Meloni became the Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, marking the first time a woman has held this role in her country.

Since 1960, over 55 countries around the world have been led by women at various points in time. In contrast, the United States, along with countries like China, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and others, has never had a female leader throughout these decades.

The question then arises: why has the United States, a country that prides itself on equality and progressiveness, lagged in electing a woman president?

One of the primary reasons could be the deeply entrenched societal norms and political culture in the United States. Despite the progress made in women’s rights, the political arena in the U.S. has historically been dominated by men, with power concentrated in the hands of a select few. The two-party system in the U.S. also plays a role; it tends to favor established figures who have built a career over decades, which traditionally has been more accessible to men.

The challenges encountered by women candidates were most effectively illustrated by Hillary Clinton in 2016, following her unsuccessful bid for the presidency. She made history by becoming the first woman to receive the endorsement of a major political party in the race for the President of the United States. Throughout her campaign, Clinton was often subjected to sexist remarks. After losing the election to Donald Trump, she reflected on these challenges in an interview with TIME magazine, stating, “…But we face what is a pernicious double standard that is aided and abetted by the idea of perfectionism.”

Additionally, the perception of leadership in the U.S. has often been associated with traditionally masculine traits such as strength, decisiveness, and aggression. This perception has made it more challenging for women to be seen as equally capable leaders, despite their qualifications. Women candidates often face double standards, where they are scrutinized not just for their policies but also for their appearance, demeanor, and even the tone of their voice.

In contrast, countries like India and Sri Lanka, despite being less developed in terms of economic indicators, have had a different approach to leadership. In many cases, the rise of women to power in these countries was facilitated by their familial connections to former male leaders. For example, Indira Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, and Sirimavo Bandaranaike was the widow of Solomon Bandaranaike, a former prime minister of Sri Lanka. While these familial ties played a role in their political ascendancy, it is also true that these women demonstrated remarkable leadership and resilience in their own right.

Moreover, in some of these nations, the cultural context differs significantly. In India, for instance, the concept of “Devi” or the divine feminine is deeply ingrained in the cultural psyche. This reverence for the feminine, paradoxically coexisting with patriarchy, may have made the idea of a woman leader more acceptable to the masses.

Islamic countries like Pakistan, on the other hand, present an even more complex picture. Benazir Bhutto’s rise to power in a male-dominated society and her assassination are emblematic of the extreme challenges women leaders can face. Yet, her election also reflects a certain level of openness in the political process that allowed a woman to emerge as a leader, despite the odds.

The absence of a woman president in the United States is a complex issue rooted in historical, cultural, and political factors. While the U.S. continues to champion women’s rights globally, it faces its own unique challenges in breaking the highest glass ceiling. The election of a woman president in the U.S. would not only be a milestone in its own history but would also align the country with global trends where women have already proven their mettle as national leaders.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a pivotal visit to Ukraine, the international community closely watches India’s diplomatic maneuvers. This journey, anticipated to occur around August 23, will be Modi’s first to Ukraine since the conflict with Russia erupted, spotlighting India’s unique position in the geopolitical landscape.

India’s long-standing friendly ties with both Russia and Ukraine position it as a potential mediator in the ongoing crisis. Modi’s visit underscores India’s commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, reflecting its policy of facilitating peaceful resolutions with the consent of all parties involved. His rapport with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the trust placed in India by both nations bolster Modi’s potential role as a peace broker.

However, this diplomatic effort is not without its complexities. Western sanctions on Russia following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine contrast sharply with the continued trade relations maintained by “friendly” countries like India and China. Modi’s recent visit to Moscow, during which he condemned a tragic Russian missile attack on a Kyiv hospital, drew sharp criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Despite this, India has refrained from directly blaming Russia, instead advocating for a diplomatic resolution.

The United States, aiming to strengthen its strategic ties with India to counterbalance China’s growing influence, has expressed concerns over India’s relationship with Russia. As Modi’s visit approaches, New Delhi must carefully navigate these intricate relationships, balancing its eastern and western alliances.

Modi’s trip to Ukraine carries significant diplomatic weight, as India’s efforts to mediate in the Ukrainian crisis could shape the region’s future and affirm India’s role as a key player on the global stage.

Celebrating Indian Americans’ Political Ascension

The political landscape in the United States is on the cusp of a transformative shift, driven by the burgeoning influence of Indian Americans. The upcoming national election highlights this phenomenon, with key figures such as Kamala Harris and Usha Vance bringing Indian heritage to the forefront. Harris, endorsed by President Joe Biden, symbolizes the increasing political engagement and prominence of Indian Americans. Similarly, the presence of Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy in the Republican primary underscores this trend.

Indian Americans, despite constituting a mere 0.6% of the adult citizen population, have achieved remarkable representation in government. They occupy nearly twice their population percentage in the U.S. House of Representatives and hold 4.4% of senior government positions. The shared colonial history between India and the U.S. contributes to this success by imparting a robust understanding of democratic processes and English proficiency among Indian immigrants.

The Indian American population has grown exponentially from 400,000 in 1980 to 4.4 million in 2020, making it the largest single-origin Asian demographic in the country. High voter turnout and increasing representation in both local and national politics demonstrate their political influence. In Washington State, leaders like Pramila Jayapal, Manka Dhingra, and Vandana Slatter exemplify this rising political force.

As we look toward the future, the potential nomination of Kamala Harris could further galvanize Indian American voters and inspire more to seek political office. This burgeoning political power not only enriches American democracy but also highlights the vital contributions of Indian Americans to the nation’s political fabric.

Timeless Wisdom Ramcharitmanas at the UN

At the United Nations headquarters in New York, Morari Bapu, a revered Indian spiritual leader, will deliver a historic Ram Katha. This event, showcasing the timeless teachings of the Ramcharitmanas, highlights its universal messages of truth, love, and compassion. Morari Bapu’s mission is to promote global harmony, drawing from over sixty-five years of sharing Ram Kathas worldwide. This event aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, addressing issues like mental health and environmental sustainability. Through the teachings of the Ramayana, Morari Bapu aims to foster unity, brotherhood, and a balanced, harmonious lifestyle on a global scale.

On January 20, 2021, Kamala Harris shattered multiple glass ceilings when she was sworn in as Vice President of the United States. Her historic ascent marked her as the first woman, the first Black American, and the first Indian American to occupy the nation’s second-highest office. This momentous event was celebrated worldwide, symbolizing the triumph of diversity and representation in American politics. Harris’s achievement is a beacon of hope, reflecting the possibilities that arise when barriers are broken and new paths are forged.

As Vice President, Harris has tackled numerous challenges with unwavering determination, demonstrating her commitment to justice, equality, and the well-being of all Americans. Her multifaceted identity and rich cultural heritage have uniquely positioned her to address the diverse needs of the American populace. She has been a relentless advocate for underrepresented communities, striving to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

President Biden’s endorsement of Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential race marks another historic milestone. If elected, she would become the first Black and Indian American woman to lead a major party ticket, further solidifying her legacy as a trailblazer. Her candidacy promises to inspire countless individuals, particularly young women of color, to aspire to leadership roles.

Harris’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of representation in governance. As the 2024 presidential race unfolds, her story will undoubtedly continue to inspire and energize voters, reinforcing the belief that America’s strength lies in its diversity and its ability to embrace change.

India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled an ambitious $576 billion budget for the current fiscal year, designed to stimulate manufacturing and job creation in the world’s fastest-growing major economy. This budget surpasses earlier estimates and underscores the government’s commitment to economic revitalization. A notable allocation of $32 billion is earmarked for rural development, with new programs targeting states governed by key coalition allies supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The updated budget forecasts spending of 638 Billion, a 1.2% increase from the interim estimate. This revision includes a substantial dividend transfer from the central bank, enabling a reduction in the fiscal deficit target to 4.9% of GDP. Additionally, the government aims to invest $24 billion in job creation over the next five years.

The budget reflects a strategic focus on infrastructure investments and tax reforms to bolster economic growth and maintain political alliances.

On a lighter note, this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a significant milestone by becoming the most followed world leader on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter. This achievement underscores his global influence and the wide-reaching impact of his communication strategy. Modi’s adept use of social media has allowed him to connect directly with millions of people, transcending traditional media barriers. His posts, often blending policy updates, cultural celebrations, and personal reflections, resonate with a diverse audience, fostering a sense of direct engagement with the leader of the world’s largest democracy. This milestone is not just a testament to Modi’s popularity but also highlights the evolving dynamics of political communication in the digital age. As social media continues to shape public discourse, Modi’s ascendancy on this platform exemplifies how leaders can leverage digital tools to amplify their message and connect with constituents on a global scale.

A profoundly dark chapter in the annals of American democracy

The recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump marks a profoundly dark chapter in the annals of U.S. democracy. This act of violence, targeting a prominent political figure, reverberates beyond partisan lines, shaking the very foundation of democratic principles. Regardless of one’s political stance, an attack on a former leader is an attack on the democratic process itself, challenging the nation’s commitment to peaceful transitions of power and political discourse.

For a long time, the United States has taken pride in its role as a beacon of democracy, resolving political differences through dialogue, elections, and the rule of law. The attempt on Trump’s life underscores a growing undercurrent of extremism and division that threatens to erode these foundational ideals. It is a stark reminder of the potential consequences of political polarization and the urgent need for a return to civility and respect in public discourse.

In this critical moment, it is essential for leaders across the political spectrum to unequivocally condemn such acts of violence. Unity in the face of this adversity is crucial. We must replace the rhetoric of hate and division with calls for understanding and collaboration. This incident should serve as a catalyst for introspection and reform, prompting a national conversation about the importance of safeguarding democratic norms and ensuring the safety and respect of all political figures.

As we navigate this dark chapter, it is incumbent upon every citizen to reaffirm their commitment to democracy. The future of the nation depends on our collective ability to rise above division, reject violence, and recommit to the democratic ideals that have long defined the American spirit.

PM Modi’s strong stand against political violence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expression of deep concern and solidarity following the attack on former US President Donald Trump underscores the profound importance of condemning violence in any political landscape. The incident, occurring at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulted in the tragic death of a spectator and injuries to several others, including Trump himself. This violent act starkly contrasts the democratic principles both the United States and India uphold.

Modi’s condemnation highlights a crucial message: violence has no place in political arenas. His words serve as a reminder that we must respect and protect democratic processes, free from fear and coercion. While the US Secret Service’s swift neutralization of the assailant prevents further casualties, it also highlights the ongoing need for robust security measures during political events.

As investigations continue, it’s imperative for leaders worldwide to unite against such acts of violence, reinforcing the sanctity of peaceful political discourse. Modi’s solidarity with the American people, coupled with his concern for his friend’s safety, exemplifies the spirit of international friendship and mutual respect. This attack should galvanize all democracies to reaffirm their commitment to non-violence and uphold the values that define them.

Usha Chilukuri Vance, JD’s Indian-origin wife: A historic momentt

The nomination of JD Vance as Trump’s VP pick introduces a historic element, with Usha Chilukuri Vance, JD’s Indian-origin wife, playing a significant role. Usha, a distinguished attorney, has been a crucial influence in JD’s life, blending their diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds. Their dual wedding ceremonies, honoring both traditions, symbolize their commitment to cultural integration.

Usha’s Hindu upbringing and professional achievements, including her education at Yale and Cambridge, as well as her notable legal career, have deeply influenced JD’s perspectives and political ambitions. Her role in JD’s journey highlights the power of diverse influences in shaping leaders.

As the Vance family steps into the national spotlight, they bring a narrative of unity, resilience, and cultural diversity. Usha’s significant influence on JD underscores the importance of integrating different cultural identities, setting a profound example for the nation. This historic VP candidacy not only marks a political milestone but also celebrates the richness of American diversity.

“This is not the time for war.” PM Modi to Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trip to Russia has made headlines, signaling a pivotal moment in the diplomatic ties between India and Russia. As global tensions continue to simmer, Modi’s visit underscored the significance of dialogue and cooperation in today’s volatile geopolitical landscape.

During his visit, PM Modi reiterated a powerful message: “This is not the time for war.” In a world where conflicts have wrought unimaginable devastation, Modi’s words resonate as a call for peace and diplomacy. His discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin were not just about strengthening bilateral relations but also about addressing global concerns. Modi expressed deep anguish over the casualties of war, particularly the tragic deaths of children. He poignantly remarked, “My heart bleeds,” capturing the human cost of conflict and the urgent need for a resolution.

The emphasis on humanitarian concerns, alongside strategic and economic discussions, reflects India’s balanced approach to international relations. Modi’s diplomacy highlights India’s role as a peace advocate, urging nations to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than warfare. This approach aligns with India’s long-standing tradition of non-violence and its contemporary aspirations to play a constructive role on the global stage.

India is navigating a complex international environment while strengthening ties with Russia. The collaboration between these two nations, with their shared history and mutual interests, could pave the way for new avenues of cooperation in technology, defense, and trade. Modi’s visit is a testament to India’s commitment to fostering partnerships that promote peace, stability, and progress. As we reflect on this significant diplomatic endeavor, it is imperative that we support efforts that prioritize humanity and the collective good over discord and destruction.

Embracing India’s Role as a Global Peace Mediator

During PM Modi’s recent visit to Moscow, the United States emphasized India’s potential to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine, as well as between Israel and Palestine. This recognition reflects India’s evolving role on the global stage. With its historical non-aligned stance and deep-rooted commitment to diplomacy, India stands uniquely positioned to foster dialogue and reconciliation.

PM Modi’s leadership, marked by a balance of pragmatism and visionary statesmanship, aligns with the complex demands of these conflicts. India’s emphasis on peaceful coexistence and its successful navigation of diverse internal dynamics offer a model for conflict resolution. By leveraging its diplomatic ties and cultural connections, India can indeed pave the way for enduring peace.

The global community’s confidence in India’s ability to mediate underscores a pivotal moment. It is an opportunity for India to reinforce its legacy as a beacon of peace, exemplifying the transformative power of dialogue and understanding in a fractured world.

The landmark visit to Austria

PM Modi’s landmark visit to Austria marks a pivotal moment in India’s diplomatic history, bridging a four-decade gap since Indira Gandhi’s historic trip in 1983. Following a strategic visit to Russia, PM Modi’s arrival in Vienna underscores India’s commitment to fostering stronger international ties.

This visit is not merely symbolic; it is a deliberate step towards enhancing bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation. PM Modi’s meetings with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and Chancellor Nehammer initiated significant developments in various sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, and high technology.

PM Modi’s engagement with the Indian community in Vienna and the business leaders’ summit highlight a multifaceted approach to diplomacy, intertwining economic, cultural, and geopolitical threads.

Embracing India’s Economic Ascent

On a world economic front, India stands on the cusp of a transformative decade, as highlighted by Morgan Stanley’s report, “The New India: Why this is India’s decade.” Several key factors, including offshoring, increased manufacturing investments, energy transition, and advanced digital infrastructure, are propelling the country’s trajectory towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy and stock market by 2030.

On a recent trip to Moscow, PM Modi said, “When I came here in 2015, I had said that the 21st century will belong to India. Today, the world is saying this. Today, India is giving new confidence to the world. India’s growing capabilities have given hope for stability and prosperity to the whole world.

Geopolitical shifts and the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated the move towards a multipolar world, reinforcing India’s strategic importance on the global stage. As US-China trade tensions and the Ukraine conflict reshape global economic dynamics, India’s proactive policies, including reduced corporate taxes and production-linked incentive schemes, are boosting its competitiveness.

While challenges remain, India’s large population, strategic alliances, and robust policy framework position it to emerge as a formidable global power. As we embark on this promising journey, it is imperative to harness these opportunities to drive inclusive and sustainable growth, ensuring that India’s ascent benefits all its citizens.

The air crackles with excitement. India, the sleeping giant of cricket, has awakened a champion. The triumphant return of our T20 World Cup winners is a moment etched in history, a testament to dedication, resilience, and sheer talent.

Prime Minister Modi’s breakfast with the team at his residence was a fitting start to the festivities. It speaks volumes about the importance cricket holds to our national identity. The players, adorned in their special jerseys emblazoned with “champions,” are a powerful symbol of victory. Their journey, however, wasn’t without its challenges. Stranded in Barbados due to the hurricane, they persevered, their focus unwavering. The BCCI’s swift response in arranging their return flight ensured the celebrations could begin.

Delhi erupted in cheers as the team arrived. Soon, Mumbai will witness a grand victory parade, a sea of blue shirts swaying in unison. Fans, young and old, will line the streets, their voices carrying the echoes of a nation united in pride. The open-top bus ride from Marine Drive to the iconic Wankhede Stadium promises to be a spectacle, a vibrant tapestry woven with joy and gratitude.

This victory transcends the sport’s boundaries. It’s a reminder that, with grit and determination, anything is possible. We will always remember Virat Kohli’s match-winning knock and Jasprit Bumrah’s phenomenal bowling. This win belongs not just to the players but to the entire coaching staff and the countless fans who fueled their journey with unwavering support.

Let the celebrations ring out! Let this victory be a beacon of inspiration for generations to come. India, the land of a billion dreams, has once again proven its prowess on the world stage. We stand tall, united in our love for the game and the heroes who brought the trophy home.

A Celebration of Faith and Heritage

This year’s India Day Parade in New York City promises to be a particularly momentous occasion. The parade will prominently feature a replica of the newly inaugurated Ram Mandir in Ayodhya for the first time ever. This towering symbol of faith will undoubtedly draw the attention of Indian Americans from across the region, fostering a deeper connection to their heritage.

The Ram Mandir replica comes on the heels of a historic year for Hindus worldwide. Prime Minister Modi’s performance of the Pran Pratishtha rituals in January marked the culmination of a long-fought struggle and the triumphant return of Lord Ram to his rightful place. This momentous occasion resonated deeply with Indian communities across the globe, and the replica at the parade serves as a powerful reminder of that shared cultural significance.

The India Day Parade itself is already a vibrant celebration of Indian independence and heritage. With over 150,000 spectators lining the streets, the parade pulsates with cultural performances and floats representing the diverse tapestry of Indian American life. The inclusion of the Ram Mandir replica adds another layer to this rich tapestry, showcasing the deep faith and traditions that bind many Indian Americans together.

The recent Ram Mandir Rath Yatra, which traversed thousands of miles across the US, further underscores the unifying power of this sacred site. The chariot, carrying revered deities and blessings from Ayodhya, served as a focal point for Hindu communities, fostering a sense of shared identity and strengthening their connection to their homeland.

The Ram Mandir replica’s presence at the India Day Parade marks the culmination of these efforts. It’s a chance for the Indian American community to celebrate not just their heritage but also the faith that holds such a special place in their hearts. This unique display is sure to be a highlight of the parade, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Ram Mandir.
