San Francisco-based attorney Harmeet Dhillon, a prominent conservative voice and key member of Donald Trump’s legal team, has been officially confirmed by the U.S. Senate to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. Dhillon, known for her outspoken alignment with the former president and her firm stance on right-wing legal causes, will now oversee the division’s criminal and civil cases, including hate crime investigations, voting rights cases, and police discrimination probes.

During her confirmation process, Dhillon voiced strong opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, labeling them unconstitutional and supporting efforts to ban them across public and private institutions—a stance consistent with the Trump-era agenda, as noted by Reuters.

Dhillon has long been active in Republican circles, previously serving as chair of both the San Francisco Republican Party and the Republican National Lawyers Association. She played a significant role in Trump’s 2020 campaign and co-chaired Women for Trump. Although she failed in her 2023 bid to unseat Ronna McDaniel as head of the Republican National Committee, her influence within the GOP has steadily grown.

Known for her frequent appearances on Fox News, Dhillon is an unapologetic critic of liberal policies, often speaking out on polarizing issues like vaccine mandates and the FBI’s Mar-a-Lago raid. Her confirmation is seen by many as a dramatic shift for the Civil Rights Division, which has historically championed the protection of voting access for marginalized communities.

According to Democracy Docket, Dhillon’s appointment signals a possible reversal in the division’s mission. Her firm was highly active during the 2022 midterms, supporting GOP legal actions aimed at challenging election outcomes and curbing voter access in key battleground states. This includes representing Kari Lake in Arizona and Abraham Hamadeh, both of whom disputed their election losses with unproven fraud claims.

She also defended restrictive voting policies in Pennsylvania and Georgia, representing Republican clients attempting to roll back mail-in voting and enforce stringent voter ID laws.

Despite her controversial positions, Dhillon continues to stress her belief in inclusion. She led a Sikh prayer at the Republican National Convention last year, saying it was meant to reflect values like humility and justice. She previously performed the same prayer at the 2016 convention, expressing her view that the Republican Party embraces diversity.

Furthermore, the PM GatiShakti initiative has expanded its scope to the social sector, addressing service gaps in critical areas such as healthcare and education, ensuring that underserved communities benefit from infrastructure growth. Each state and union territory has developed its own State Master Plan in alignment with the national framework, streamlining capital investments and fostering coordinated development efforts. The initiative has also contributed to improving India’s global logistics standing, as reflected in the country’s advancement in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index. Moving forward, the program aims to foster cross-sector collaboration and embrace new technologies, positioning it as a key pillar in the vision of a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and future infrastructure growth.

Approximately half of the proposed launches are commercial ventures, with the remainder being user-funded, scientific, or technology test missions. Seven of the commercial missions are attributed to NewSpace India Ltd., the commercial wing of the Department of Space, including the realization of two Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV) through a consortium involving L&T and HAL. This surge in launch activity signals significant growth in the country’s space sector.

This initiative aligns with the objectives outlined in India’s recently ratified Space Policy, which entrusts IN-SPACe with the authorization of launch manifestos. These manifestos encompass a wide range of missions, from ISRO’s scientific endeavors to commercial launches, aligning with the vision of ‘Aatmnirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India).

Key private sector ventures include sub-orbital and orbital launches by companies like Agnikul Cosmos and Skyroot Aerospace. Various private sector satellites, including those from Digantara Research & Technology, Dhruvaspace, and academic institutes like IIT-Madras, are also slated for launch.

While the launch manifesto outlines planned missions, IN-SPACe remains flexible to accommodate additional requirements from private players. The roster includes missions scheduled for the current fiscal year and the following year, encompassing a diverse array of endeavors ranging from ISRO’s user-funded missions to commercial space endeavors.

Among the highlighted missions are PSLV C58, GSLV-F14, and AGNIBAAN-SORTeD in the current fiscal year, followed by PSLV C60, GSLV F15, and a host of commercial ventures in the subsequent year. These missions underscore India’s commitment to expanding its presence in space and fostering a vibrant space ecosystem.

Dhillon, who plays a pivotal role in the University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and leads the ULTRACAM project, emphasizes the camera’s revolutionary capabilities. It is the first instrument capable of accurately identifying gamma-ray bursts, which signal the onset of a Kilonova explosion. Kilonova, arising from the fusion of two compact neutron stars, is believed to be the source of the heaviest elements on the periodic table, including gold, platinum, and uranium, found on Earth.

Dhillon stated, “Our camera ULTRACAM was the first to locate the gamma-ray burst, the second brightest ever observed, signaling the start of the kilonova explosion. This discovery enabled us to activate telescopes worldwide for further observations, including the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).”

Before joining the University of Sheffield, Dhillon’s career included roles at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, with positions in Herstmonceux/Sussex, La Palma, and later in Cambridge. His significant contributions to the field were recognized when he received the Royal Astronomical Society Jackson-Gwilt Medal in 2013. Furthermore, he held the prestigious title of ERC Advanced Grant holder from 2014 to 2019.
