Trump justified the tariff by stating that since India charges the US 52%, America will charge half of that in return. The decision is part of a broader move imposing tariffs on about 60 countries.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi condemned the measure, calling it a financial burden on American families and small businesses, warning that it isolates the US from its allies while empowering adversaries. Congressman Ro Khanna, in a video statement, described the move as an unplanned and chaotic policy that could lead to inflation, economic slowdown, and even recession.

Indian-American Congressman Dr. Ami Bera warned that these tariffs would ultimately raise costs for consumers rather than benefit the economy. Ajay Bhutoria, former advisor to President Biden, highlighted the risks to India’s key export industries, predicting financial strain and job losses.

Experts, including Asia Society Policy Institute’s Wendy Cutler, cautioned that the tariffs could disrupt global supply chains, weaken US economic growth, and provoke retaliatory measures from affected nations. With concerns rising over inflation, trade instability, and diplomatic fallout, leaders are urging both nations to engage in dialogue to find a balanced solution.

Hyundai is set to list one of its subsidiaries outside of South Korea for the first time. The IPO will be available for public subscription from October 15 to October 17, with anchor investors able to submit bids on October 14.

Tarun Garg, COO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), stated that after 26 years in India, the company believes it is the right time to further localize its operations. Hyundai currently holds the second-largest share in the Indian passenger vehicle market. Garg added that the IPO reflects the brand’s desire to become the most trusted name in India, benefiting from the country’s strong economic growth, which has outpaced global averages in recent years.

As Hyundai continues to expand, including the development of a new plant in Pune, the company sees this IPO as an opportunity to involve both local and global investors in its growth story. Garg emphasized that the offering would help Hyundai pursue global standards in operations, governance, and excellence.

HMIL has set the price range for the IPO at $22.43 to $23.58 per share, valuing the company at $19 billion. The IPO size at the upper range is pegged at $3.34 billion, surpassing the $2.62 billion offering by Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in 2022.

During his recent visit to India in January, Pyatt emphasized the potential for enhanced collaboration between the two countries, despite acknowledging potential slowdowns due to upcoming election cycles.

Addressing an online international media briefing on February 5, Pyatt shared his optimistic outlook, noting the shared strategic objectives between Indian and U.S. bureaucracies and the alignment in private sector efforts. Discussions during his visit centered on energy transition, reliable supply chains, and energy security, underscoring the importance of mutual success in these endeavors.

Pyatt also referenced a historical comparison to illustrate the evolving nature of the U.S.-India trade relationship. Reflecting on a remark made by former U.S. Ambassador Robert D. Blackwill in 2002, Pyatt recalled the characterization of U.S. trade flows into India as “flat as a chapati.” However, he noted that the current state of affairs resembles a “big and puffed up” puri, indicating significant growth and potential in the trade ties between the two nations.

While acknowledging that formal free trade agreement negotiations are not underway, Pyatt emphasized ongoing efforts to bolster trade relations through important negotiations. Despite the impending election cycles in both countries, he assured that dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral ties will persist.

Anarock Group’s report reveals strong quarter-on-quarter growth, marking a 7% increase in total residential property sales for the first nine months of 2023, surpassing the entire sales value of the previous year. Notably, the top seven cities saw Rs. 3,48,776 crore (US$ 41.86 billion) worth of inventory sold during this period, exceeding the entire inventory sold in the preceding year.

Anuj Puri, Chairman of Anarock Group, attributes the surge to heightened demand for premium luxury homes in 2023. Comparing annual sales values poses a challenge due to an 8% to 18% rise in average prices in top cities this year.

Between January and September 2023, approximately 349,000 units were sold across seven key Indian cities, slightly lower than 2022’s 365,000 units. Delhi-NCR, MMR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, and Kolkata showed a significant 44% year-on-year increase in the total sales value of homes. MMR led with about Rs. 1,63,924 crore (US$ 22.86 billion) worth of inventory (approximately 111,280 units) sold, reflecting a notable 41% yearly gain. Delhi-NCR followed closely, reporting a cumulative sales value of around Rs. 50,188 crore (US$ 6.75 billion) (approximately 49,475 units), reflecting a significant 29% jump. Hyderabad sold 44,220 units valued at about Rs. 35,802 crore (US$ 4.29 billion) between January and September 2023, compared to around Rs 25,001 crore (US$ 3 billion) in the corresponding period of 2022. Chennai saw a 45% surge in overall housing sales values, from around Rs. 7,825 crore (US$ 939.0 million) in the first nine months of 2022, with approximately 16,310 units sold.

Presently engaged in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, he anticipates two upcoming chances to surpass his compatriot Sachin Tendulkar’s longstanding record for the highest number of ODI hundreds.

In his first opportunity, Kohli aims to break the record against the Netherlands in Bengaluru, with all eyes on him during this crucial match. However, if unsuccessful, another opportunity awaits in the semi-final against the fourth-placed team.

Should India secure victory in the semi-final, the prospect of Kohli claiming the record amplifies as they advance to the World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The potential decider could feature South Africa or Australia.

Of Kohli’s 49 ODI centuries, four were achieved in previous Cricket World Cups, with two added to his tally in the ongoing tournament against South Africa and Bangladesh. As we reflect on these four World Cup centuries, anticipation mounts to witness if Kohli can secure a fifth, thereby breaking Tendulkar’s significant record in the forthcoming matches.

Kohli’s inaugural World Cup century came in partnership with Virendar Sehwag against Bangladesh, contributing to India’s commanding total of 370/4. Four years later, he reached a century for the second time in a World Cup, this time against arch-rival Pakistan, guiding India to a winning score of 300/7.

In the current World Cup, Kohli showcased his consistency with a century against Bangladesh in Pune, sealing the win with a spectacular innings. His most recent ODI century, on his 35th birthday, demonstrated resilience against South Africa’s formidable bowling lineup, propelling India to a massive total of 326/5.

As Kohli approaches the milestone of 50 ODI centuries, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await to witness if he can etch his name in history by surpassing Tendulkar’s monumental record.
