The Indo-American Association Houston (IAA) will present acclaimed Odissi dancer and choreographer Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya’s

The 90-minute production will take place at MATCH in Houston as part of IAA’s programming in the Midtown Houston Cultural Arts and Entertainment District. Bhattacharya has conceived, written, choreographed and performed the title role in the production.

Rather than simply retelling the ancient epic, The Draupadi Phenomenon examines Draupadi’s experiences through a contemporary lens. Born from fire and publicly humiliated in a royal court, Draupadi refuses to remain silent and challenges those who fail to protect her.

The production explores questions that continue to resonate in modern society, including who speaks for women, who has the authority to make decisions for them and what happens when institutions and bystanders remain silent in the face of injustice.

Bhattacharya combines the expressive vocabulary of Odissi with the dynamic and martial movement of Mayurbhanj Chhau. Ensemble choreography, recorded music and multimedia elements create a theatrical presentation designed to connect with audiences regardless of their familiarity with Indian classical dance or the Mahabharata.

The musical score features contributions from internationally recognized artists, including santoor player Tarun Bhattacharya and Grammy Award-winning mohan veena musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. The ensemble includes performers trained in Odissi, Chhau and Bharatanatyam, including artists based in Houston.

IAA Houston Executive Director Sheetal Bedi said the production reflects the organization’s goal of presenting ambitious work rooted in Indian traditions while encouraging conversations across cultures.

Bhattacharya’s career spans more than four decades. She has performed internationally and is known for productions that use classical Indian dance to explore contemporary social themes. Through the Sanchita Dance Foundation and teaching initiatives in India, the United States and China, she has also trained and mentored emerging dancers.

Founded in 1993, IAA Houston is a nonprofit presenter dedicated to performing arts from the Indian subcontinent. The organization has been recognized as a Houston Cultural Treasure and promotes cultural exchange, artistic innovation and dialogue across communities.

Indian American scientist and technology leader Sethuraman Panchanathan has been selected to receive the 2026 Arthur M. Bueche Award from the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), becoming the first Indian American to receive the honor in its more than four-decade history.

Panchanathan is a University Professor of Technology and Innovation at Arizona State University (ASU) and previously served as director of the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The Bueche Award recognizes engineers whose work advances science and technology policy, technological development and collaboration among industry, government and academia.

The National Academies cited Panchanathan’s leadership in advancing fundamental science, technology and policy, along with his efforts to expand translational research and opportunities across the United States.

His interest in science and engineering began during childhood in Chennai. In 1969, he visited the American Center with his father to see rocks returned from the Apollo 11 mission. The experience sparked his fascination with the scientific and engineering achievements behind space exploration.

Panchanathan later built a career spanning research, innovation and technology policy. During his tenure as the 15th NSF director, he oversaw the agency during the COVID-19 pandemic and helped establish a new directorate focused on translating scientific and technological advances into economic, national security and societal benefits.

Before leading the NSF, he held several senior positions at ASU, including chief research and innovation officer and head of its Knowledge Enterprise. According to ASU, the university’s research volume tripled during his tenure in those roles.

Panchanathan has since returned to ASU, where his work includes artificial intelligence, quantum computing and the future of higher education. In April, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego appointed him to lead the city’s quantum strategy.

He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2024 and became the first person from Arizona to receive the Bueche Award. University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella nominated him for the honor.

Panchanathan also received India’s Padma Shri in 2025 for his contributions. The Arthur M. Bueche Award will be presented in October at the NAE’s annual meeting in Washington, DC.

India and the United Arab Emirates are looking to significantly expand their economic relationship, with bilateral trade projected to reach $200 billion by 2032. The target reflects growing commercial ties, stronger investment flows and new opportunities expected through the BRICS grouping.

Mohammad Haseeb, Strategic Country Manager at Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone, said there remains considerable scope for businesses in both countries to deepen their engagement. India-UAE trade currently stands at about $101 billion, up from roughly $73 billion before the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

The trade pact has helped improve market access and encouraged greater commercial interaction between the two economies. Officials and business representatives believe that as more companies become familiar with the opportunities available under CEPA, its contribution to bilateral trade could increase further.

Investment is another major pillar of the relationship. The UAE has invested approximately $25 billion in India over the past two decades and has recently announced an additional investment commitment of about $5 billion. The commercial connection also extends to the large Indian business community in the UAE, where more than 200,000 Indian companies are operating.

The partnership is increasingly moving beyond conventional trade and investment. Tourism, digital payments, technology and emerging technologies are becoming important areas of cooperation. The presence of around 4.5 million Indians in the UAE also continues to strengthen business and people-to-people connections between the two nations.

Digital initiatives such as the Unified Payments Interface, virtual payment corridors and collaboration in emerging technologies are creating additional avenues for economic integration. These developments could make cross-border transactions and business operations more efficient while opening opportunities for technology-focused companies.

The UAE’s participation in BRICS during India’s 2026 chairship is also expected to create fresh possibilities for trade and investment. The grouping could provide Indian and UAE businesses, including startups, with a wider platform to explore partnerships and investment opportunities across member economies.

Investment engagement is also expanding at the state level. Delegations from Punjab, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha have explored opportunities in the UAE, while UAE-based investors continue to assess projects and businesses in India.

Indian space-tech company GalaxEye has reached a significant milestone after obtaining a United States patent for the technology powering its proprietary OptoSAR imaging system. The newly secured patent protects the underlying architecture that allows optical and microwave sensors to operate together in a coordinated manner. The technology builds on an invention that GalaxEye has also patented in India, giving the company additional protection as it works to commercialize its Earth-observation platform beyond the domestic market.

GalaxEye says its approach addresses a long-standing challenge in satellite imaging by combining optical imagery with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data at the sensing stage. This enables the system to capture information that is matched both spatially and temporally, potentially producing a more comprehensive view of conditions on Earth.

A key advantage of the technology is its ability to operate regardless of weather or lighting conditions. Established in 2021 by IIT Madras alumni Suyash Singh, Denil Chawda, Pranit Mehta, Kishan Thakkar and Rakshit Bhatt, GalaxEye has positioned itself around the development of advanced space technology originating in India. The founders’ focus is not only on building satellites but also on creating intellectual property that can compete in global deep-tech markets.

The startup has already taken its technology into orbit through Mission Drishti, which launched on May 3. The mission demonstrated GalaxEye’s capabilities in Earth observation and represented a major achievement for India’s privately developed space sector.

Looking ahead, GalaxEye has an ambitious expansion plan. Over the next five years, the company intends to establish a 30-satellite constellation designed to serve government, defense and commercial customers.
