This initiative aims to enhance grassroots participation within the party.

During the event, Modi renewed his membership alongside BJP president J P Nadda and general secretary Vinod Tawde, who has been appointed as the convener for this nationwide membership campaign. Under the new initiative, active members of the BJP are tasked with enrolling at least 50 individuals as party members within specific booths or assembly constituencies. Importantly, only those with active membership will have the right to participate in the party’s organizational elections, set to commence following the completion of the membership drive.

Expressing his enthusiasm on X, Modi stated, “Adding momentum to our endeavor of making a Viksit Bharat! As a BJP Karyakarta, I am proud to become the first Sakriya Sadasya and launch the Sakriya Sadasyata Abhiyan today. This movement will further strengthen our Party at the grassroots and ensure effective contributions from our Party Karyakartas for national progress.”

Active members will also be eligible to contest elections for positions starting from the Mandal Committee level and above, with Modi emphasizing the ample opportunities available for these members to serve the party in the future.

The BJP conducts a new membership drive every six years, requiring all existing members to re-enroll while also welcoming new participants. On September 2, Modi had previously initiated the BJP’s 2024 membership campaign, dubbed ‘Sanghatan Parva, Sadasyata Abhiyan 2024,’ where he renewed his own membership and encouraged party workers to focus on engaging youth.

On the inaugural day of this latest drive, approximately 4.7 million members registered, and during the initial phase from September 2 to September 25, a remarkable total of 60 million members were enrolled.

The poll indicates that voter enthusiasm is on the rise, particularly among Democrats, compared to the 2020 election cycle.

The latest survey, which closed on Sunday, shows that 78% of registered voters are “completely certain” they will participate in the upcoming election, an increase from 74% during the same period in 2020. This sentiment is shared across party lines, with 86% of Democrats and 81% of Republicans expressing certainty about voting.

Harris entered the presidential race in July following President Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign after a lackluster debate performance against Trump. Despite Trump’s initial status as a frontrunner, buoyed by perceptions of economic strength amid recent inflation issues, Harris has gained ground on several key issues.

The poll reveals that voters prefer Harris over Trump when it comes to healthcare policy and handling political extremism. She leads Trump by 5 points on issues related to political threats and by 14 points on healthcare. However, Trump is viewed as the better candidate for managing the economy, leading Harris by 5 points in that regard.

The poll highlights the critical nature of battleground states in determining the election outcome. While national polling offers insights into voter sentiment, the Electoral College ultimately decides the winner, and both candidates are closely matched in key states.

Voter turnout will be crucial, especially given the historical turnout rate of just two-thirds in the 2020 election, which marked the highest in over a century. Despite high engagement, neither candidate enjoys overwhelming popularity, with only 46% of voters holding a favorable opinion of Harris and 42% viewing Trump positively.

This latest poll surveyed 938 U.S. adults, including 807 registered voters, with a margin of error of approximately 4 percentage points. Among likely voters, Harris’s lead over Trump increases slightly to 47% to 44%.

Indian and Indian-origin faculty at prestigious U.S. universities have launched a unique virtual mentoring initiative called the ‘MARG’ series, aimed at supporting students and researchers from India. Announced on Tuesday, this program is coordinated with India’s Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission, focusing on connecting students from Indian universities—particularly those in smaller cities and towns—with top American universities.

The primary goal of the ‘MARG’ series, which stands for Mentoring for Academic Excellence and Research Guidance, is to expose Indian students and researchers to the latest advancements in their fields of study. Participants will receive valuable knowledge, career advice, skills training, and research opportunities from leading experts in the U.S.

Renowned Indian-origin faculty from institutions such as Stanford, Purdue, the University of Maryland, and George Mason University are set to take part in the inaugural round of the series.

During the launch, Deputy Chief of Mission Sripriya Ranganathan emphasized the growing academic and research ecosystem in India, particularly in critical and emerging technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), high-performance computing, quantum science and technology, bioengineering, clean energy, and advanced materials. Ranganathan noted that collaboration in these sectors would strengthen the academic-research-technology partnership between India and the U.S.

Vice Chancellors and Directors from the participating Indian universities expressed optimism that the mentoring sessions would greatly benefit students and faculty engaged in teaching, skilling, and research in these vital areas.

India’s digital landscape is poised for significant expansion, with an additional USD 900 billion expected to be added by 2030, as outlined in a report from Motilal Oswal. Currently contributing USD 0.3 trillion, or around 8% of the nation’s GDP, the digital sector is anticipated to quadruple to USD 1.2 trillion by 2030, making up 20% of India’s total GDP.

The report also predicts that while India’s overall GDP will grow by 1.7 times by 2030, the digital sector will outpace this growth, expanding at four times its current size. This trend underscores the increasing role the digital economy will play in shaping India’s broader economic future.

India has already become a leader in various facets of digital adoption. For instance, smartphone penetration in the country has now reached 72.3%, and high-speed internet access is available to 52.4% of the population, contributing significantly to the sector’s growth.

One of the most influential factors in this digital adoption has been the widespread use of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), with around 25% of the population using the platform for everyday transactions. In addition, the number of smartphone users has almost doubled in just four years, from 485.1 million in 2020 to 938.3 million in 2024, reflecting India’s increasing connectivity.

Data consumption has also surged, with average monthly usage per user more than doubling from 13.5 GB in 2020 to 24.1 GB in 2024. This growing reliance on digital services and internet connectivity highlights the bright future of India’s digital economy, with rapid growth anticipated across several key sectors.

Mr. Sandeep Poundrik, the Secretary of the Ministry of Steel, announced that this mission is inspired by the National Green Hydrogen Mission and is designed to motivate steelmakers to enhance their green steel output. This initiative comes as global pressure mounts to cut carbon emissions, especially with the European Union planning to implement a 25% carbon tax on steel and aluminum imports. A formal definition of green steel is expected by October, which will pave the way for the mission’s launch in December. Presently, around 10% to 20% of government procurement involves green steel, a figure likely to rise as production scales up.

The government is considering redirecting approximately US$ 357.4 million (Rs. 3,000 crore) in unutilized funds from the earlier PLI scheme for specialty steel to support green steel initiatives, subject to necessary approvals. With India’s growing steel consumption driven by rapid economic expansion, the government is also reevaluating the National Steel Policy 2017. Introduced in 2019, the Steel Scrap Policy emphasizes boosting green steel production capacity. Mr. Poundrik noted that the initial projection for steel capacity by 2030 was 300 million tonnes, but demand has exceeded those estimates. The Ministry of Steel is also addressing challenges in the steel scrap policy, particularly within the informal sector, which plays a crucial role in recycling steel scrap.

During the “60 Minutes” segment, Harris reiterated the Biden administration’s view of immigration as a persistent issue, indicating that Congress must take action to resolve it. When probed about the administration’s immigration policies, she attributed the surge in border crossings over the past three years to the pandemic’s impact. Although faced with queries about the timing of the administration’s response, Harris emphasized the need for Congressional collaboration to address the problem effectively, pointing to recent legislative efforts.

On the topic of international relations, Harris stated she would not meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine, asserting that Ukraine must play a pivotal role in shaping its future. She affirmed her commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression while refraining from commenting on potential NATO expansion.

In a notable moment of bipartisanship, Harris appeared alongside former Republican Representative Liz Cheney, who endorsed her, emphasizing the importance of upholding constitutional principles and the rule of law.

Additionally, Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, acknowledged past inaccuracies in his statements and noted Harris’s advice to be more cautious with his words.

Finally, Harris criticized Trump for opting out of his scheduled “60 Minutes” interview, contrasting her openness to questions with Trump’s preference for controlled, friendly interactions. She asserted that the American public is ready for change and is looking for leaders who prioritize unity over personal grievances.

As of September 27, 2024, the reserves reached $704.89 billion, driven by a $12.6 billion increase in the latest week, the largest weekly rise since mid-July 2023. This surge reflects the central bank’s consistent dollar purchases alongside valuation gains.

India is now the fourth global economy to cross the $700 billion reserve threshold, joining China, Japan, and Switzerland. The country has steadily built up its foreign reserves since 2013, a period when foreign investors withdrew due to weak economic indicators. Improved inflation control, economic growth, and narrower fiscal and current account deficits have helped attract foreign investments, contributing to the accumulation of reserves.

Foreign inflows, particularly in local debt markets included in a prominent J.P. Morgan index, have added $30 billion so far this year. India’s foreign exchange reserves have swelled by $87.6 billion in 2024, far surpassing the near-$62 billion increase in 2023.

According to economist Gaura Sen Gupta from IDFC First Bank, ample forex reserves reduce currency volatility, enabling the RBI to intervene in the market when necessary. This also boosts investor confidence, lowering the risk of abrupt capital outflows. The recent gains include $4.8 billion from dollar purchases and $7.8 billion from valuation improvements, thanks to a weaker U.S. dollar, declining Treasury yields, and rising gold prices.

The RBI’s interventions have also contributed to keeping the rupee stable, maintaining it within a narrow trading range. As a result, the Indian rupee has been among the least volatile currencies in emerging markets. With the U.S. presidential election around the corner, the event is expected to raise over $5 million, primarily supported by American donors, including prominent Indian American figures like Swapnil Agarwal, CEO of Nitya Capital.

Agarwal emphasized the growing support for Trump within the Indian American business community, particularly among small and large business owners who favor Trump’s policies on immigration, foreign affairs, and the economy. He highlighted the achievements of Trump’s first presidency, citing his administration’s handling of key issues such as foreign policy, law and order, and economic growth. Agarwal is critical of the Biden-Harris administration, particularly in light of recent international conflicts and rising inflation, and believes a Trump presidency offers a better future for America.

Although Indian American Republican Nikki Haley dropped out of the race, Agarwal noted that her campaign didn’t resonate with the Indian American community. He attributed this to her being perceived as an establishment candidate and a lack of visionary leadership compared to Trump.

Agarwal also acknowledged the influence of Vance’s wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, on her husband’s political career, referencing their shared appreciation for Hindu values.

In a touching expression of gratitude and cultural connection, the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) USA recently celebrated Raksha Bandhan, also known as “Universal Oneness Day,” by honoring the dedication and courage of first responders in various cities. This annual event, which represents protection and unity, featured HSS volunteers tying rakhis on police officers, firefighters, and community leaders, symbolizing the protective bond these individuals have within society.

In Cleveland, HSS members honored Solon’s firefighters and police officers by tying rakhis around their wrists as a token of appreciation for their service. Attending the event were Solon Mayor Edward Kraus and Vice Mayor Nancy Meany. Kraus expressed that “events like this not only build bridges across cultures but also dispel ignorance and foster trust,” adding his gratitude to HSS for sharing their traditions and contributing to a harmonious community vision. Fire Chief Mark Vedder showcased a rakhi from the previous year’s celebration, reflecting on the strong relationship between the community and first responders.

In Livermore, California, the local police and fire departments participated in a ceremony organized by HSS volunteers, where first responders were honored with rakhis for their selfless service. HSS leaders emphasized that the event embodies the Indian principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which translates to “the world is one family,” highlighting the significance of community and togetherness, particularly in tough times.

Similarly, in Naperville, Illinois, HSS hosted a Raksha Bandhan event outside the police department, where police chief Jason Arres and fire chief Mark Puknaitis were among those honored. Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli attended the event, reflecting on the importance of public service and the strong relationship between first responders and the community. This ceremony has become a cherished annual tradition in Naperville since 2008, with rakhis tied as gestures of appreciation for those devoted to public safety.

Traditionally, Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival where sisters tie sacred threads, or rakhis, on their brothers’ wrists, symbolizing love, affection, and a commitment to protect each other. Through this celebration, HSS seeks to broaden the meaning of Raksha Bandhan beyond familial connections to encompass the societal responsibility of safeguarding one another. Honoring first responders and civic leaders during this festive occasion reflects a commitment to serving the community and promoting unity among diverse cultural backgrounds.

According to the latest Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, the number of active credit cards in India saw a continued rise in August 2024, with banks issuing over 0.92 million new cards. This is an increase from the 0.755 million cards added in July, pushing the total number of credit cards in circulation to 105.5 million. Year-over-year (YoY) credit card additions grew by 15.6%, with a sequential increase of 0.9%.

HDFC Bank led the market, issuing 0.241 million new cards in August, bringing its total to 21.9 million. However, this was lower than the 0.4 million new cards the bank added in July. ICICI Bank followed, issuing 0.145 million new cards, increasing its total base to over 17.5 million. Axis Bank and SBI Cards added 0.127 million and 0.11 million new cards, respectively.

Despite this growth, analysts have pointed out that lenders are becoming more cautious due to the RBI’s stricter risk-weight norms for unsecured loans. Bunty Chawla, a banking analyst from IDBI Capital, highlighted a 22.3% month-on-month (MoM) increase in net new cards for August, although YoY growth declined by 34.3%.

Kotak Mahindra Bank, which is currently under an RBI ban due to technology-related issues, saw a reduction in its total credit cards by 61,191 in August, lowering its base to 5.413 million. The bank has been unable to issue new cards or onboard new customers since April, following the RBI’s decision to halt its card operations due to IT system gaps.

Furthermore, the growth in credit card transaction volumes has slowed, increasing by just 1.6% in August. Credit card spending dropped 2.6% MoM, falling to US$ 20.21 billion (Rs. 1.69 trillion) from US$ 20.68 billion (Rs. 1.73 trillion) in July. The RBI has expressed concerns over the unsecured loan segment, advising lenders to exercise caution when extending personal loans for consumption purposes.
