General Asim Munir has been elevated to the rank of Field Marshal, the highest military title in Pakistan, previously awarded only once in the country’s history to General Ayub Khan in 1965. The promotion marks a significant development within Pakistan’s military hierarchy and comes amid broader regional tensions.

The announcement has sparked a wave of public commentary, with many drawing historical parallels to Ayub Khan, whose tenure as Field Marshal was marked by the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Observers note that such a title carries both symbolic and strategic weight, particularly in a nation where the military plays a central role in governance and national policy.

Asim Munir currently serves as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff. His promotion has reignited debate regarding the role of military leadership in times of conflict and the implications of bestowing such honors during ongoing geopolitical challenges.

Analysts have questioned the timing and necessity of the move, highlighting that the Field Marshal rank is typically reserved for wartime military victories or exceptional service. With no formal statement detailing the grounds for Munir’s elevation, public speculation has intensified.

The decision comes at a time when the Pakistan Army faces scrutiny over recent strategic and operational outcomes. While the military establishment has yet to comment in detail, the promotion appears aimed at reinforcing institutional authority and signaling continuity in leadership.

The historical precedent of Ayub Khan’s self-promotion and subsequent rise to the presidency has led to further comparisons. Though no political ambitions have been stated by Munir, political analysts note that such a high-level promotion often indicates consolidation of power and influence within the state apparatus.

As Pakistan navigates its internal and external challenges, the elevation of General Munir to Field Marshal is likely to remain a subject of domestic discussion and international observation.

This remarkable evening attracted representatives from over 15 diplomatic missions, including Consuls General and staff from various countries. The initiative was inspired by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj’s vision of enhancing global harmony, embodied in the saying, “In the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.”

The festivities kicked off with a Welcome Reception at the Haveli, where diplomats were warmly greeted by volunteers adorned with garlands, accompanied by traditional Indian music and refreshments. San Bernardino County Supervisor Curt Hagman addressed the guests, welcoming them to Chino Hills and San Bernardino County. Following the reception, attendees participated in a guided tour of the Mandir, where they gained insights into Hindu architecture and the Mandir’s significance and history.

Among the diplomatic missions in attendance were representatives from countries such as the United States, St. Vincent & Grenadines, Peru, Hungary, Switzerland, and India, among others. Numerous guests shared their thoughts on their experiences, including Mr. Ezra Chiloba, the Consul General of Kenya in Los Angeles, who conveyed his admiration for the community’s commitment and the beauty of the Mandir.

After the tour, guests enjoyed a Diwali Gala set against a stunning backdrop of Burmese teakwood, elegantly decorated in the festive spirit. The evening included keynote speeches from guest speakers and a traditional vegetarian meal presented on steel thalis.

Following Diwali traditions, a diya lighting ceremony was held, led by Mr. Matt Kawecki from the United States Department of State and Mr. Rakesh Adlakha, the Deputy Consul General of India in San Francisco. In his opening remarks, Mr. Kawecki highlighted the importance of events like this in fostering mutual understanding among diplomats, emphasizing the strength that diversity brings to the United States.

The highlight of the evening was a keynote address by Pujya Brahmaviharidas Swami, Head Swami at the BAPS Mandir in Abu Dhabi. He conveyed a message of peace and unity, welcoming guests to the heart of the Mandir and recognizing the diplomats’ dedication to creating harmony worldwide.

The program concluded with remarks from Mr. Adlakha, who underscored the significance of such events in enhancing cultural understanding and unity. With major events like the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and the Olympics in 2028 on the horizon, the evening ended with a hopeful message about the importance of global harmony. Guests departed feeling inspired and committed to promoting respect and unity among nations.

Harris also indicated her commitment to including a Republican in her Cabinet, stating, “I don’t want any ‘Yes’ people. I want people to come in and kick the tires on ideas,” during her address at a campaign event in Arizona aimed at garnering Republican support.

To ensure structured input on policy matters, she emphasized the need for a bipartisan council, saying, “So I’m going to create a bipartisan council so we can put some structure around exactly this point. And do the work that is important.”

Harris’s recent campaign efforts included a swing through Nevada and Arizona from Wednesday to Friday. During this trip, she participated in various events, such as a Univision town hall in Las Vegas, a meeting with the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, and a campaign rally in Phoenix.

Both Nevada and Arizona are regarded as critical battleground states in the upcoming election. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that Harris is leading her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, by three percentage points, with 46 percent support compared to Trump’s 43 percent.

In Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state, Trump held two rallies earlier this week, while Harris enlisted the help of former President Barack Obama to rally support for the Democrats. Recent polls indicate an exceptionally close race, with varying leads for both candidates across different surveys.

Cameron Kerry, a professor at the Brookings Institution, emphasized that this election is shaping up to be “extremely tight,” with either Harris or Trump having the potential to secure the presidency. In an interview with ANI, Kerry noted that although the initial momentum seemed to favor Trump, Harris has managed to narrow the gap significantly, especially following her strong performance in the second presidential debate.

“It’s a very close contest. A Wall Street Journal poll aptly described it as ‘Even, Steven, tight, tight, tight.’ This has been a consistent trend throughout the campaign. Harris has effectively reversed the narrative from Trump’s advantage. The political landscape in America remains deeply polarized, with both parties clashing over narrow issues. It’s anyone’s game, but the debate had a notable impact, highlighting Trump’s diminished performance compared to earlier in his career,” Kerry explained.

Kerry, who serves as the Ann R. and Andrew H. Tisch Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Brookings, is a recognized expert in areas like privacy and artificial intelligence. He also pointed out that turnout will be critical in the final weeks, as candidates strive to energize their supporters and optimize ground operations in battleground states.

Kerry further stated that both domestic issues like immigration and foreign policy significantly influence voter decisions. He observed that various communities prioritize different matters, including ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Trump has consistently criticized the Democrats, arguing that the Biden administration has diminished the US’s stature on the global stage. He claims that had he been in office, the conflicts in both regions would not have escalated, vowing to resolve them if re-elected.

“Voters typically prioritize their perceived needs, particularly economic and domestic concerns like immigration. However, foreign policy also plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions of leadership and safety, impacting specific issues for distinct communities, especially concerning the Gaza conflict and Ukraine. Trump advocates for an America-first approach, while the Biden administration seeks to restore international alliances,” Kerry remarked.

Kerry also highlighted the abortion issue, a contentious topic in American politics, suggesting that the promise of preserving abortion rights could bolster Democratic support, reminiscent of its effect during the 2022 midterm elections. He observed the current gender disparity in politics, highlighting that women are increasingly aligning themselves with the Democratic Party.

Both Biden and Harris have committed to restoring abortion rights, while the Republican stance continues to oppose them. Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, has taken an even more stringent position against abortion.

Regarding Trump’s numerous legal challenges, Kerry expressed skepticism about their impact on his voter base, indicating that many Trump supporters remain loyal. However, he acknowledged that some moderate voters might be troubled by the former president’s legal issues.

“It’s remarkable. Trump has maintained a steadfast support base, even claiming he could commit serious crimes without losing voter confidence. He has proven that point as he continues to raise funds despite multiple indictments. Yet, he is the first former president ever to be convicted of a crime, which could alienate some moderate voters, especially those within the Republican Party who have publicly declared he is unfit for office,” Kerry stated.

Trump faces a total of 91 felony charges across four criminal cases, including allegations of election interference and mishandling classified documents, all of which he dismisses as politically motivated attacks.

Kerry believes Harris’s Indian heritage could be a significant advantage, potentially attracting substantial support from the Indian-American community, which he describes as increasingly influential in various sectors.

“I think her background is definitely a plus. The Indian-American community is vital and excited about her candidacy. They have made significant strides in fields like technology and business, influencing American society in meaningful ways,” Kerry commented.

Former President Trump aims for a historic comeback after his contentious departure from the presidency in 2020. Should he succeed, it would mark the first time in over a century that a president serves two non-consecutive terms. Meanwhile, Vice President Harris, who made history as the first female, first Black, and first Asian American vice president, could become the first woman to hold the office of the presidency if elected.

The US presidential elections are set to take place on November 5.

This prestigious fellowship is awarded annually to individuals who demonstrate exceptional creativity and potential in their fields.

The MacArthur Foundation praised Paik for her deep exploration of the multifaceted experiences of Dalit women, revealing the systemic caste-based discrimination that perpetuates untouchability. As an affiliate faculty member in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Paik’s remarkable journey from Pune’s Yerwada slum to becoming a renowned academic has inspired many. Despite growing up in challenging conditions, she pursued higher education, obtaining a master’s degree from Savitribai Phule University and a doctorate from the University of Warwick.

Paik is the first individual from both the University of Cincinnati and the city of Cincinnati to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. She is also one of only 10 Ohio-based awardees since the fellowship began in 1981. Speaking with UC News, Paik emphasized how education and employment provided a path out of the slums, profoundly shaping her perspective on caste and gender.

Her first book, Dalit Women’s Education in Modern India: Double Discrimination (2014), sheds light on the dual challenges Dalit women face in Maharashtra. Her second work, The Vulgarity of Caste: Dalits, Sexuality, and Humanity in Modern India (2022), delves into the lives of Dalit women in Maharashtra’s Tamasha tradition.

Paik’s research, focusing on the intersection of caste, gender, and sexuality, has earned her multiple honors, including fellowships from the Stanford Humanities Center and the American Institute of Indian Studies. With the MacArthur grant, Paik aims to continue her vital research and writing, further raising awareness of the struggles of Dalit women and the ongoing effects of the caste system in India.

Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that a high-level committee is assessing the specifics of this initiative.

The goal is to forge a robust brand identity for India, reminiscent of the strong quality associations linked with labels like “Made in Japan” or “Made in Switzerland.” An official involved in the talks expressed, “We aspire to achieve a similar recognition for India.” They pointed out that just as Switzerland is recognized for its watches, chocolates, and banking systems, the objective is to cultivate a comparable image for Indian products.

Discussions are underway about whether the initiative should be tailored for particular sectors where India has established strengths, such as textiles. Experts referenced in the report emphasize that fostering quality awareness is crucial for effectively promoting the ‘brand India.’

The India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) is responsible for promoting and increasing international recognition of the “Made in India” label on behalf of the government. This foundation operates as a trust established by the Department of Commerce to bolster India’s brand strategy on the global stage.

According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), a think tank cited in the report, the branding strategy should be grounded in three main pillars: promoting high-quality products, enhancing the quality of lesser products, and prioritizing actions to boost product quality rather than merely focusing on branding.

Experts emphasize that “India can adopt several strategies to enhance its branding naturally, with a strong focus on maintaining consistent product quality and reliability as a top priority.” They noted that the Indian pharmaceutical industry has successfully gained international trust by delivering high-quality generic medications.

To maintain this positive reputation, strict measures must be enforced against suppliers of substandard products, as emphasized by Ajay Srivastava, founder of GTRI. He argued that branding should be secondary until India achieves top-tier production standards in any sector.

Srivastava further illustrated that between 1990 and 2010, China became the largest contract manufacturer of electronics like TVs and refrigerators without emphasizing branding. Only after establishing confidence in their product quality did China aggressively promote its brands.

India could create a cohesive brand known as “India Quality Product” that signifies excellence and reliability. To qualify for this label, manufacturers and exporters would need to meet specific standards regarding product quality and packaging.

This initiative might initially focus on categories such as garments, footwear, and handicrafts, where India has a rich heritage, before gradually expanding to encompass electronics and engineering products.
