This forecast is underpinned by robust macroeconomic fundamentals, including a rebound in rural consumption, which has been bolstered by favorable agricultural yields.

During a recent interview with PTI, Srinivasan indicated that inflation is expected to moderate to 4.4% in FY24-25, despite experiencing some fluctuations as food prices stabilize. He affirmed that fiscal consolidation remains on target, even with the upcoming elections, and highlighted the resilience of India’s reserve position.

Srinivasan emphasized the necessity of implementing reforms in three critical areas following the elections. First, he advocated for job creation by implementing the labor codes introduced in 2019-2020. These reforms would provide flexibility to the labor market while ensuring social protection for workers.

Second, he pointed to the importance of reducing trade barriers to enhance competitiveness. By liberalizing trade policies, productive firms can flourish, which in turn can foster job creation across sectors. Lastly, he stressed the need to improve both physical and digital infrastructure. In addition to these areas, he called for agricultural and land reforms, alongside a commitment to investing in education and workforce development.

Srinivasan also underscored the importance of strengthening the social safety net and enhancing the business environment by tackling bureaucratic red tape. He noted that potential investors often face significant challenges when entering the Indian market, acquiring land, or exiting investments.

The director reported that India’s unemployment rate has dropped to 4.9%, supported by increasing labor force participation, currently at 56.4%. However, he expressed concern about the persistently low female labor participation rate and high youth unemployment, indicating that substantial efforts are needed to improve the job landscape and make it more inclusive.

This approach will be crucial for ensuring that India continues to thrive economically and can effectively address the challenges posed by a rapidly evolving job market.

The number of AI app downloads worldwide surpassed 2.2 billion in the first eight months of 2024. Popular applications in this category include chatbot platforms like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini, alongside various image and video editing tools. However, most Indian users opt for the free versions of these apps. In stark contrast, North America and Europe generated 68% of the in-app purchase revenue from AI apps, which exceeded US$ 2 billion this year. India contributed less than 2% to this revenue. The overall revenue from AI apps is expected to hit US$ 3.3 billion by the end of 2024, marking a 51% increase from last year.

In 2023, global downloads of AI and chatbot applications grew more than 14 times, reaching close to 600 million. By August 2024, this figure had surpassed 630 million. ChatGPT led the downloads globally, followed by apps like Remini, Photoroom AI Photo Editor, and Google Gemini. Neil Shah, a partner and co-founder at Counterpoint Research, noted that consumers are increasingly using chatbots for tasks such as transcription, translation, and summarization. He also pointed out the rise of an “app-less ecosystem” supported by advanced AI capabilities. For this shift to succeed, manufacturers need to innovate with faster processors and higher memory capacity, as AI-driven apps require at least 12 GB of RAM to function effectively.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, shared that women’s participation in the workforce has seen a remarkable increase, doubling in the last seven years. He observed that this growth parallels a trend where women are working longer hours than men in specific industries, a shift he attributed to the inclusive labor policies introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mandaviya referred to this shift as a “silent revolution,” noting that it has changed conventional ideas about women’s roles in the labor market. He credited initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, Stand-Up India, and Skill India for playing pivotal roles in advancing women’s economic involvement. Similarly, Ms. Smriti Irani noted that women in professional, scientific, and technical fields are now surpassing men in weekly working hours, with some exceeding 55 hours per week.

Additionally, the government is working on a new framework to further increase women’s workforce participation by tackling major challenges and offering extended social security to women in the unorganized sector. A Business Standard analysis of Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data revealed that self-employment among women soared to 67.4% in 2023-24 from 51.9% in 2017-18. This growth was more pronounced in rural areas, where the percentage jumped from 57.7% to 73.5%, while urban areas saw a rise from 34.7% to 42.3%. Women’s overall participation in the labor force surged to 41.7% in 2023-24, compared to 23.3% in 2017-18.
