A significant deal, the multi-billion-dollar P-75I submarine project, is currently under review, with Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Spain’s Navantia competing to supply six advanced submarines to the Indian Navy. The deal, valued at over $5.16 billion, is set to top the agenda during German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to India this week, with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also scheduled for discussions.

The German defense industry, largely privatized, is fully committed to facilitating such transactions. While 95% of India’s previous defense requests have been approved, the process will now be expedited due to India’s special status, the envoy added.

On the P-75I submarine deal, Ackermann noted that the German government is ready to engage formally, but an official decision from India is required before proceeding, given the significant investment involved. TKMS has proposed its Class 214 submarine design, partnered with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, while Navantia, in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro, has offered a submarine based on its new S80 class.

A crucial aspect of the P-75I project is the inclusion of an operationally proven Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which extends a submarine’s endurance. Germany has demonstrated its AIP, although it slightly falls short of required endurance. Navantia, on the other hand, has shown its AIP capability but has yet to demonstrate its full performance while submerged.

Germany has also simplified its licensing processes for military equipment sales to India, ensuring faster approvals for future deals, including a license for small arms.

Indian Americans, along with South Asians, are showing significant support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the lead-up to next month’s US election, according to two recent polls. The latest poll conducted by Indian American Impact (IAI) across five swing states reveals that 68% of South Asians favor Democrat Harris, giving her a 48-point lead over Republican Donald Trump, who garnered only 20% support within this community.

These swing states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania—are crucial as neither party holds a solid majority, making them pivotal in determining the election outcome. IAI Executive Director Chintan Patel noted during a community briefing that the South Asian voter demographic is substantial enough to influence tight race results in these states.

A second poll by Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAV) found that 69% of Indian Americans plan to vote for Harris, with 28% supporting Trump. This marks a rise in Democratic support compared to the 46% who indicated they would vote for Biden during the earlier April-May polling period.

When asked about the most significant aspect of Harris’s identity, only 23% of Indian Americans prioritized her Asian Indian or South Asian heritage. In contrast, 42% emphasized her identity as a woman, 34% noted her age, and 18% acknowledged her African identity. Interestingly, among other Asian American communities, her Asian Indian or South Asian heritage was more significant, with percentages of support ranging from 24% to 35%.

In terms of favorability, 76% of Indian Americans view Harris positively, and 66% have a favorable opinion of her vice presidential candidate, Tim Walz. Surprisingly, 31% of Indian Americans expressed a favorable view of Trump, while only 19% had a positive perception of JD Vance, who is married to an Indian American lawyer.

The APIAV poll, conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, indicated that 35% of Indian Americans were worried about election-related violence and 48% expressed concerns afterward. Additionally, 49% highlighted fake news as a significant problem, while 41% were concerned about legal challenges to the election process.

Regarding voter turnout, a robust 83% of Indian Americans stated they were absolutely certain to vote, with only 4% indicating they would not participate in the election.

The IAI poll revealed that 71% of South Asians hold a favorable view of Harris, contrasting sharply with Trump’s support of just 22%. The primary issues driving South Asian voters’ decisions include inflation and the economy (26%), followed by abortion (19%) and foreign policy (12%). Immigration, while emphasized by both parties, received only 6% as a significant factor.

When Indian Americans were specifically asked who they trust to manage India-US relations, 59% chose Harris compared to only 22% for Trump. The APIAV poll showed similar results, with 54% favoring Harris for handling India-US relations. Among Japanese Americans, Harris’s trustworthiness for this issue was even higher at 65%, while only 45% of Chinese and Vietnamese Americans felt the same.

Regarding US-China relations, 56% of Indian Americans believed Harris would perform better, while only 45% of Chinese Americans agreed. In both communities, only 21% opted for Trump.

The GBAO polling firm, known for its Democratic alignment, conducted the survey with a margin of error of 4%.

The research suggests that men’s metabolisms respond best to carbohydrate-rich meals after fasting overnight, while women may achieve better health outcomes with breakfasts that are higher in fat.

Selecting appropriate foods for breakfast not only impacts energy levels but may also assist in weight loss and maintenance. Metabolism involves a series of biochemical processes that convert nutrients into energy, support growth, and repair cellular damage.

The study utilized a mathematical model that enabled researchers to simulate how various dietary options affect men’s and women’s metabolic responses. This approach aimed to address gaps in knowledge regarding gender differences in fat processing, as previous medical research has predominantly focused on men’s health.

With the help of this model, researchers examined potential dietary outcomes for women, especially in areas where clinical data is lacking. The essential components of human nutrition include carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It appears that women tend to utilize lipid metabolism more than men, who show a preference for carbohydrate metabolism.

The study’s authors highlight that understanding these metabolic differences is crucial, as they can lead to varied metabolic responses and health risks. The findings are published in the journal Computers in Biology and Medicine.

Breakfast Options: Carbohydrates vs. Fats

Michelle Routhenstein, MS, RD, CDCES, a Preventive Cardiology Dietitian not involved in the study, recommended breakfast foods for each gender. For men, she advised choosing macronutrient-balanced carbohydrate-rich meals with soluble fiber, such as oatmeal, smoothies, or yogurt bowls topped with berries and nuts.

In contrast, Routhenstein suggested women include heart-healthy fats in their breakfasts, such as chia pudding, vegetable omelets, or cottage cheese paired with flax seeds and apples.

Understanding Women’s Faster Fat Metabolism

Senior investigator Anita T. Layton, PhD, emphasized that women retain more fat during the absorptive phase but exhibit higher fat oxidation in the post-absorptive period. “Our model can help create tailored dietary recommendations that promote metabolic health and prevent complications like postprandial hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia,” she explained. Simulations can also reveal how specific body types respond to various meal compositions.

Layton pointed out that the increased reliance on fat metabolism among women is likely due to sex differences in liver and fat tissue. The female liver tends to direct more glycerol towards gluconeogenesis and conserves glycogen more than its male counterpart, leading to lower glucose output. This phenomenon promotes fat oxidation across other organs, resulting in higher fat metabolism overall.

The Role of Sex Differences in Nutrient Metabolism

In simple terms, Layton stated, “Women store more fat, but they also burn fat more effectively during prolonged exercise and are more efficient in metabolizing fat after fasting.” This is particularly crucial for meeting the high energy demands associated with pregnancy and lactation.

Layton also remarked on the complexities women face biologically, noting, “Unlike men, whose life stages are relatively straightforward, women navigate pregnancy and lactation, both of which require substantial nutrition and impose significant bodily changes.”

She added, “Many of the observed sex differences are adaptations that prepare women for the unique demands of reproduction.”

Routhenstein highlighted that, in heart health research, there’s growing acknowledgment that many past studies neglected women, leading to a conscious effort to prioritize research focused on women’s health, particularly during peri- and post-menopausal transitions.

During a recent high-profile fundraiser, Vice President Kamala Harris took a direct shot at Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, proudly noting the substantial crowds she draws while campaigning nationwide, as reported by the Associated Press. Her remarks aimed to solidify her backing in critical battleground states like Arizona and Nevada, where she held a rally in the same venue Trump had used just two weeks earlier.

Trump has been vocal in his criticisms of Harris, particularly regarding immigration policies. Acknowledging the narrow margins in the upcoming election, she referred to the race as a “margin-of-error” contest but asserted confidently, “The election is here, and let me be clear. We are going to win.”

As she prepared to speak in Nevada, Harris remarked, “My crowds are pretty big,” reiterating her earlier comments made during the presidential debate where she suggested Trump’s rallies were losing attendees due to his lengthy speeches. This tactic has continued to feature prominently in her campaign messaging.

Harris’s four-day tour along the West Coast combined fundraising efforts in California with key stops in battleground states, underscoring the tight nature of the presidential race. Her visit to the US-Mexico border in Douglas, Arizona—her first since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee—was likely aimed at addressing immigration concerns, an issue Trump has used to criticize her, accusing her of allowing a border “invasion.”

Harris dismissed Trump’s claims, stating, “We just see the same old tired show from the same old tired playbook,” as some audience members echoed her sentiment with shouts of “boring!”

The fundraiser in Los Angeles featured performances from artists like Halle Bailey and Alanis Morissette, drawing a star-studded crowd that included Stevie Wonder, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Demi Lovato, and Jessica Alba. Moreover, Harris has received backing from certain Republicans, such as former Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, who praised her for her “fine character and love of country.” Flake stands alongside other anti-Trump Republicans like Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz in endorsing her candidacy. However, Maryland Senate candidate Larry Hogan has stated that Harris has not yet earned his vote, and he remains opposed to Trump as well.

In her Nevada rally, Harris reiterated her commitment to abolishing federal taxes on tips for service industry workers, a promise similar to one made by Trump. However, she went further by pledging to address the issue of “sub-minimum wage,” where employers pay less than the standard wage and depend on tips to meet compensation requirements. Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer of Nevada’s Culinary Union, remarked, “That shows us she’s serious.”

Harris is scheduled to return to Nevada on October 10 for a town hall meeting with Hispanic voters, highlighting the significance of the state’s six electoral votes in an election predicted to be exceptionally close. Both she and Trump have made frequent trips to Nevada, emphasizing its critical role in the race for the presidency.
